Inside Meta’s push to put robots to work in data centers
The company is testing robots on tasks that can performed by technicians.

Meta is testing robots that can plug in cables, reset servers, and handle other tasks inside its data centers, according to several current and former workers familiar with the projects. The ongoing effort, which has not been previously reported, may eventually allow Meta to operate its rapidly expanding data center footprint with fewer humans, keeping labor costs in check as its spending on AI infrastructure soars.

Meta is using robots and related hardware from several different vendors, including Watney Robotics, Kinova, and ABB, according to the same workers, who asked to remain anonymous because they weren’t authorized to speak to the media. Kinova and ABB declined to comment. Watney didn’t respond to requests for comment.

In one experiment, Meta is evaluating whether a Kinova Gen3 robotic arm could be used for power cycling or cutting off electricity to servers. The company is also testing a different robot to swap networking cables. One Meta data center worker estimates that if it’s successful, the bot could replace up to 80 percent of some people’s workloads. “We thought those of us performing the physical tasks were safe for a while, but not anymore,” says the worker. “It’s coming for us all, unfortunately.”

At some facilities, Meta quietly adopted another, relatively simple robot. It looks like a finger—or perhaps a pointy stick—that can press the power button on a Mac Mini or other device to restart it when remotely prompted by a human.

Has facebook gone on a massive advertising campaign on youtube to try and convince people we aren't headed to a pre-Bladerunner dystopian reality?

This may be news to many, but it's been going on for a while
Did a new microchip fab for IBM back in 2001. I noticed there wasn't any small cafeteria and only a small break room with vending machines, about 3 large refrigerators, and about 8 microwaves. I asked an IBM engineer with me, Why no small kitchen/cafeteria? For the size of the fab I was expecting 80-120 day shift and 50 or so night. He told me not needed as the foups and information is fully automated. The only people in there will be occasional technicians working on the tools and robotics.

Went back to the same site about 5 years later for another project and viewed that fab through the hall viewing portals. Not a soul in site and all those tools just blinking away, foup containers moving from tool to tool on automated tracks. It was spooky. This was about 20 years ago.

Edit.. I wanted to add this about the technicians that work on these robotic tools in microchip plants. I was working late night and had a evening break/meal with a tech I had been working with. I straight up asked him how much money they made. This was around 2010. He said usually they could make between 150k-200k fairly easy. They could go over 200k if they wanted to work a lot of OT. You see, they have to do maintenance on very expensive tools that cost a lot of money when down. They work in teams around the clock like a human operation to minimize down time. Said they get GREAT per diem packages for travel to plants and always stayed in nice hotels and ate good. Most of them were single or between marriages and grinding away for money.
