That number is unlikely to be too low, but it easily could be too high.
I have no idea what this means.... seems very contradictory.

When a nation's moral center collapses, the wheels on the wagon start wobbling PDQ. Right now America is roughly 50/50. IMO the next midterms will decide it all.
I'm full of cliche's today - ultimately a morally bankrupt peoples will vote into office people who mirror their values. Even if those values are diametrically opposed to the common good of all.
The more things change, the more they stay the same. Poor Jesus did nothing but good, He fed thousands with a couple of fish and a few loaves of bread. He brought the dead back to life. They thought He was a King come to free them from oppression. I always believed the masses turned on Jesus when He insisted that "If a soldier demands that you carry his gear for a mile, carry it two miles". (Matthew 5:41)
But if America descends into Godless hedonism (hint: we're well on our way to that), I firmly believe historians will trace the beginning of her fall to ONE event - January 22, 1973 SCOTUS rules on Roe v Wade. That was the day SCOTUS told God to get lost.
"But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord". - Joshua 24:15

It just means that the guess is likely to be lower than that rather than higher than that.
How is that contradictory?
Nevermind, I see the typo. Corrected now.

I doubt it's even close to the national debt but it's multi billions.
Sure. Like I said, it needs to be recovered.

The good that could be done with that money would stimulate the economy to the point that we could run a surplus.

Just pave the damn roads, build the bridges, improve our infrastructure, lower taxes.
Well, do do that we'd still have to borrow and add to the debt we already have.
Probably not a good idea.

You provided a number and said that number is unlikely to be too low, but could easily be too high. That's a contradiction.
If it's unlikely to be too low, then how can it easily be too high?
It's just a question. I'm not trying to argue. I think this is a thread where there should be very little argument over the premise. Maybe some disagreement on how to best combat the issue though.

Again, based on what?
That number is generally around $1.7 trillion.
Do you have any idea how gigantic that number is?
That's almost twice the annual military budget.
There's no way there's anywhere near that much fraud.
Conservative estimates put government fraud at around 20% of total spending. I believe it is higher. So even if you stamped out half of it, you'd save $170 billion annually, which, over time, could go a long way toward paying down the debt.
Now that won't matter, because the next dem admin will just turn the faucet back on. I know someone who worked in compliance for Dept of Ed. She told me almost all of their compliance officers were reassigned under Biden. They all knew the fraud was out of control, blatant in your face stuff, but the Secretary had them chasing down DEI-type violations.
