Driver licenses for illegals? An argument in favor....

From a city or state’s point of view:
If there are a bunch of illegals in your state, it’s because the federal government isn’t doing its job. If a city cop pulls someone over for a busted tail light, and there’s a family of five illegals in there (ahh, who are we kidding?—you know it’s at least seven), the cop has two choices:
1) detain them until ICE comes and gets them, and your city eats the cost of the process up until that point
2) let ‘em go because it isn’t worth the time it takes to do the paperwork, much less to detain them for who knows how long until ICE shows up.
Obviously, illegals don’t often take driver’s ed, so they are a liability on the road, and there’s no way a state can mitigate that liability without issuing them some form of documentation itself. When you take into account all the hit & runs and fatal collisions caused by illegals, the lack of documentation costs a state dearly. Since a state can’t deport anyone, and since the feds don’t do their job efficiently, what’s a state like New York to do? It’s estimated that offering a state driver license to illegals will result in ~1/3 of eligible people applying for licenses (and more importantly, car insurance), saving the state $57million.
If you’re hit & run by an illegal, you’re screwed. If the federal government couldn’t keep them out, your state might as well offer them their own sort of documentation so you can pursue the situation appropriately.

The legislation, which City Councilman Ydanis Rodriguez plans to introduce Wednesday, makes the case that undocumented immigrants should be able to get the IDs because it would make for safer roads.

So let an ILLEGAL go into a federal building and register to drive?
So ignore the federal crime of being an illegal. While all of us legals cant get licenses renewed if we are criminals
They are illegals! They arent going buy insurance

First, License to drive <> proof of citizenship.
If you're going to drive here you should be licensed.
In order to get a license, you should have to show you're here legally.

I can see doing it to create a database of illegals and where they live. That way ICE can pick them up systematically on a planned timetable.

They all should be worried about being deported all the time.
If you overstayed your visa in France wouldn't you eventually be expecting deportation. Would you expect them to give you a legal id and set you on your way?
This is all do stupid. Progs make no sense at all.

So the illegals are going to register their address and other information and buy insurance because they think that’s going to give them immunity for deportation when they are forced to interact with law enforcement after a wreck or traffic violation? You haven’t thought this through.

There are still plenty of states like Texas that would gladly hand it over.
In fact, it should be set up as part of a sting.

Can they show that license when 95000 of them illegally vote in Texas?

There’s the sense right there.

The issue at hand is that they should not be here. They should not be driving.
They should be deported.
That's the issue. You are just for legitimizing them. That's the wrong message and completely a slap in the face to those that worked hard to do it the right way.

Obviously the vast majority of pull-overs are traffic violations and routine stuff. If a city can score $100 or so of revenue from an illegal instead of haul someone in, book a tow truck, wait for ICE, and do a shite ton of paperwork for $0, they’re going to do it.
If a mami y papi know that they can pay a couple hundred a month and never have to worry about being deported for driving 7 over the limit (or let’s not kid ourselves—a little buzzed), some of them are going to do it because they like their situation that much.
