Donald Trump calls on EU to 'drop all tariffs'

LINK

quote:

The European Union is coming to Washington tomorrow to negotiate a deal on Trade. I have an idea for them. Both the U.S. and the E.U. drop all Tariffs, Barriers and Subsidies! That would finally be called Free Market and Fair Trade! Hope they do it, we are ready - but they won’t!

The US president posted his latest tweet ahead of European Commission President Jean-Claude Junker's arrival in Washington for trade talks.

Today’s news also has this:

quote:

EU commissioner suggests broad cuts to tariffs with U.S

LINK

The European Union’s budget commissioner suggested on Wednesday the bloc would be ready to discuss mutual tariff cuts with the United States across a range of products, provided Washington lifts recent punitive tariffs first.

So the EU may have at least heard Trump’s message on their tarriffs and subsidies.

quote:

Trump has repeatedly complained about the European Union, pointing to the higher duties it applies for car imports and describing the bloc as a “foe” in trade.

quote:

European Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom, who will accompany Juncker, said last week that the EU was preparing a list of U.S. products to hit if the United States imposed tariffs on EU cars.

Anyone else think it’s weird that a foreign unelected body is has that much power to negotiate trade broad deals with other nations?

From a practical standpoint, it makes sense. But I would never be okay with that if I lived in the EU.

The EU would do best by putting his feet to the fire and insist that the US quit dumping subsidized agricultural commodities on the market.

Would Trump support ending farm welfare to get rid of EU tariffs??? No he would not. (that would also take action by Congress--which one of the Trumpsters think that Trump would go into the mid terms asking Congress to end farm welfare?)

It would be best for America to end farm welfare and tariffs. New Zealand went cold turkey on farm welfare decades ago and farming is better there now than ever.

Didn’t the quote above say to end all subsidies?

Yes he did and it is very hard to believe he would make ending farm welfare an issue before the midterms.

The tariffs are TEMPORARY, if other countries would remove all barriers we would not have to impose them.

I do love the response "well we have a list of tariffs to impose". Uh sparky, dont bring a knife to a gunfight, when you have a huge surplus in trade with us, you will find it a wee bit more painful.

And giving the fact your "organization" is hanging together by a thread, the last thing you need is your weak economy heading south.....or US to move out of NATO...and Russia to move in.

Athens is burning....Rome next....while you fiddle.

That’s a fair ask. But it’s time for them to stop imposing tarrifs on American produced cars and to stop subsidizing their aircraft producers too.

We know they won’t, so we shouldn’t eliminate the only incentive for them to do so.

It’s exactly what they’re being primed for. They seek the ability to bypass our constitution through “global” decrees. Bureaucrats from the EU and the WTO want a global fiefdom.

Trump’s position is that we need free trade.

Tariffs are a tactic. They aren’t core long term policy at least not if our trade partners stop screwing us.

Do you think we should end all tarriffs if our trade partners don’t end theirs?

I realize you’ve climbed so far up this hill you know have to die on it; but didn’t the EU and Japan just sign a deal eliminating over 90% of their reciprocal tariffs?

WAPO

If they can do it, why can’t we? Or are Americans supposed to continue to roll over for our European overlords in the name of “Free Trade”?

Free trade for them. Not for us.

IB Freeman won’t like this. The only trade position IB likes is America grabbing her ankles.

Prediction---Trump will get some trivial concession--most likely on autos in EU since no car maker wants the tariffs--declare a huge win and the idea that all tariffs and subsidies will be eliminated will go by the wayside.
