I believe some people, because of mental illness, think they are being controlled by a demon. The mind is complicated. You can fool yourself into believing almost anything if your mind gets tricked into it. Believe what you can see with your own eyes. Be skeptical of things you can't.

Real genuine evil is real. A lot of progressives are willful demonic hosts. They invite it because they have turned away from God. But Satan is constantly at work everywhere.

I believe God revealed to man, through the devil's temptation of Eve, the concept of righteousness (love, community, family, reference, kindness) and that of evil (deception, selfishness, anger, manipulation, temptation).
Humans in this country generally act out of their own free will. God has provided us with the ability to develop the character within each of us. We're guided by and stand on the character and upbringing of our parents and theirs before them.
But we are all subject to the punishment of God, and so it is much easier to some to simply reject him and his love. "Too many rules!" and so without God in their lives, the evil character of men assumes control. Consider for example the matter of porn. A man of character would see that, understand what it is, and think less of the person who shared it, but never let them know, either.
It's difficult, if not impossible to chip away at the armor of a man of impeccable character. How many such men are there? Honestly, very few that I can think of. Oh, there's a lot of pious men who may claim they are, but a real man of character would never self promote his goodness.
Charlie Kirk was such a man. I think, back to your OP question, we all have God-given free will to be like Charlie or be like someone else, like the Robinson kid the killed him. Along the way, the force of God's love can guide us or the deceptive, yet seductive evil of the Devil can shape our lives, but not through demonic possession, but through our own free will.
If you turn your back on God, you embrace evil. It's a constant tug of war for those without the character to reject evil from their lives. Just a reminder for those of you who adhere to the whole idea of "unfettered access to porn is free speech", when, deep down inside, you know that a man of real character would reject it.
