Guess who it's going to?
@katiecouric
A federal judge in D.C. declined to block a House subpoena to President Trump's accounting firm, Mazars USA, for his financial records. Today, Trump formally appealed the ruling to the D.C. Court of Appeals - where the chief judge is Merrick Garland, Obama's Supreme Court nominee

But wasn't it always going to go to the DC Circuit Court of Appeals where Garland has been Chief for awhile now?

His appeal will get slapped down. He is going to have to reveal his shady business dealings to the American public for scrutiny

What do you think will be revealed?
He had some bankruptcies?
He had some failed businesses?
He had a late night infomercial college?
He had a carry forward tax loss of around 100 million dollars 20 years ago?
He sold Manhattan real estate to foreigners, including, gasp, Russians?
He built/owns/branded properties in foreign countries?
He explored the possibility of a property in Moscow?
His company has seen their revenue decrease since he ran for president because of negative media?
Every single one of these has already been examined thoroughly by the media and law enforcement, and the public already gave their judgement..... They elected DJT to be POTUS.
What possibly do you think we might learn from his taxes that has not already been beaten to death over the last 4 years?

Garland is a deferral judge. His track record was deference to administrative rule making and Congressional action. As a judge he makes the other branches of government stronger. He's the opposite of an activist judge. That's why Obama wanted him, because he would allow executive rule making to stand as an issue within the discretion of the other branch of government.
Which means that if the obligation to draft a ruling is assigned to Garland, he will likely do exactly what the district court judge did, defer to Congressional decision making on an issue which is within Congress's discretion and power.
It would take a real activist judge to say that Congress does not have subpoena power in connection with its investigations.

Well, I wouldn't take a victory lap just yet. The subpoena will be upheld and the records will be produced, but there is no reason to assume at this point that there is anything shady which can be gleaned from the records.

These aren't tax records.

quote:Has Congress (the House) stated what legislative interest it has to investigate Trump's tax returns? I know Congress has pretty broad investigative powers but they have to be used to further its legislative work. It can't investigate a private citizen simply to see what they're up to, for instance.
It would take a real activist judge to say that Congress does not have subpoena power in connection with its investigations.
