One day, it's to bring back manufacturing, the next is to get other countries to reduce their tariffs. I think there have been a few others.

Let me spell-----it-----out----for----you.

A) If a country reduces it's tariff on US goods coming into their country, those same US products will now be cheaper to their people. Leading to....

B) Those people will buy more US goods, because they are now cheaper to them.

C) US will need to ramp up manufacturing to supply this increased demand.

In addition, Trump has raised tariffs on other countries from what they were. This makes those imported products more expensive in the US, raising demand for US products, which will encourage more US mfg.

Figgy: I can help provide some context to why Vietnam wants to get tariffs eliminated. Here’s part of an email we received from a major supplier of apparel:

While our supply chain is diverse—we produce in 24 countries—all of our factory partners are affected by tariffs to some degree. This includes Vietnam (46%), Bangladesh (37%), Myanmar (44%), Madagascar (47%), Sri Lanka (44%) and China (34%). The reciprocal tariffs are stacked on top of any existing tariffs, meaning that the new tariffs on China are added to the 20% tariffs instituted earlier this year.

As soon as possible, we'll shift as much production as we can from high-tariff to low-tariff countries like Honduras, where we make most of our redacted and redacted t-shirts.

Figgy: They’re going to lose their arse if they don’t. The email also discusses price increases that “will not be insignificant”.

Those other countries sure don't want to lose business to the Honduras.

Hopefully, those other countries get into talks with Trump, negotiate something positive for the US, and soon. I know we can't just build plants here in zero time, but if we get commitments and fast action, at least jobs will get added quickly for construction of those new US factories.

You'll need permanent subsidies for this to work.

And you'll need a lot more immigration.

Pain was always the only way out of insurmountable debt. The Trump admin IMO is going too soft and really trying to hit a home run with GDP growth in order to avoid the pain but it’s a high risk/reward proposition.

Provide some backup to that. Using Toyota as an example (the foreign car maker with the largest US presence), here's what I found:

quote:

While the US government doesn't offer direct subsidies to Toyota to build car plants, it does offer grants and tax credits for the domestic production of electric vehicles and components, which Toyota has taken advantage of, investing heavily in US manufacturing

So just subsidizing the twisted EVs will save the world dream, not actual car production.

edit/add: So I see you never actually admitted you were wrong in that reply, you just moved the goal posts to.. but, but, but, it will take x,y,z.....

quote:

Well, first get rid of all the illegals, there will be more jobs for US citizens. If that's not enough, we can allow **LEGAL** immigration of people who respect the laws here, and want to contribute.

This is a losing game for him and Republicans that stand with him on these tariffs. The general public won't understand the trade war, but they do understand the market going down and prices going up. He should have tried to use incentives to bring business back, but he chose the punitive route.

Facts. I get the logic of what he’s trying to do, but it’s revolutionary. He needed more people demanding this before he did it.

Margaret Brennan is grilling Lutnick about how long this will last. He is dancing around and just saying we’re being ripped off and need a re-set.

Yeah, he doesnt even believe this stuff deep down, but he's trying to be a team player.

Funny, I just had NC Tiger claim that "being ripped off" was not a major reason for the tariffs.

Could you provide some examples of factories being built in the US that close because nobody is willing to work there?

Seems like your missing quite a few logical steps here.

His popularity will probably drop, but he’s there to fix things, not to maintain his popularity. I will tell you that your certainty is foolishness. He might fail, but I am not betting against Trump and that A-Team.

I really have no idea whether this plan is smart or dumb. It does seem insanely risky, though. Hopefully, markets settle down soon.

Sane point of view.

Bunk, There was no way to fix things without taking risk, and the longer we waited to take a risk the riskier it would have been.

It hasnt been an issue lately with refugees qualified to work. They do the work you will not do.

It will be an as soon as you try to get whitey in a factory. But those factories arent going to be built if companies are stuck hiring methheads.

Youre full of shite Comrade Shrubber. Let me preach on it. The economy here has been smoke and mirrors for awhile now. They even changed the way they measured growth to cover up weve been in a.recession. Not to mention how bad inflation actually is. Whitey will work. But not for slave wages like Won Hung Lo.

But I digress, Over the years this country proved Ross Perot right so long ago.The giant sucking sound we should have all heard was our middle class being hurt. Badly. So much manufacturing leaving the US, How many of us can remember plants that no longer exist here? Good paying jobs that no longer exist.

Not to mention prices here going through the roof. I do not understand how a young couple starting out has a chance in hell today, How in the hell have we allowed things to get as bad as they are? Because we are stupid and keep sending the same criminals to Washington regardless of party.

(Trump) "They've been hit much harder than the USA...hang tough it won't be easy"

Ok, Trump's act was funny for a while. But now he's decided to go off the rails on his noise level in every direction.

Hello. Things are already "not easy". Now he's telling America to "hang tough" when he very possibly just made it worse.

IF this whole noisy Tariff war thing goes sideways for more than a couple of years, who loses? The Middle / Working Class OR elites at their Compounds at Hyannisport, Maui or Mar a Lago? (And no, I did not vote for The Hooker and am not a "Commie")

Why must Trump be publicly antagonistic about everything and everyone? Why must Trump verbally characterize every policy as winners vs. losers in terms of WWE contests? Part of "ART OF THE DEAL"?

Can't Trump just respect the space once in a while and let policies play out without his international condescension and playground taunts?

What if Chyna decides they are publicly humiliated and out of spite to save face withhold essential material and products for a while in this verbal-economic game of chicken and create scarcities? What's that do to the economy?

The man ran on what hes doing. It isn't like he's doing something out of the blue.

If you don't like it, vote in the Communists next time and you REALLY won't like what they do. Or, maybe you will Comrade.
