Wayne A. Johnson will be the new head of Office of Federal Student Aid after James Runcie abruptly resigned last month, the U.S. Department of Education announced this week. FSA is the agency responsible for administering $1.4 trillion in outstanding student loans from 42 million borrowers, plus other aid programs for millions of college students.

As not mentioned in the department's press release, and first reported by BuzzFeed, Johnson is currently the CEO of Reunion Financial Services Corporation, a private student loan company.

quote:

Liz Hill, press secretary at the U.S. Department of Education, provided NPR with a statement that read in part: "Dr. Johnson has 30 years of experience in the private sector and is going to be a tremendous asset to the Department and to FSA's customers [...] Wayne knows this industry inside and out and has seen first-hand the benefits of serving students and helping them meet their financial and educational goals. This is just another reason why we are so excited to have him on the team as we work to put students' needs first."

We'll see. Thoughts?

The Feds shouldn't be in the student loan business.

I don't trust DeVos at all, but maybe the new appointee will manage FSA better. I just doubt it will be beneficial for students, considering his past.

Sounds like she hired someone who is very familiar with the ins and outs of the process.

Much like POTUS, he's someone that knows the good and bad, and loopholes of the system.

Sounds like the perfect person to get things straight for the country.

He does seem like a better fit for this than Trump does for President, that's for sure.

Less of a burn attempt and more of a statement of fact. He's immensely more qualified for his position than Trump is for President. It's not really debatable.

Why I care about who is now in charge of administering over a trillion dollars of outstanding student loans? Because it's a high-impact topic.

The problem i have with this is that his company would benefit along with other financial institutions if not as many funds were available to students. The student loan program through the fed is much better for the students because it subsidizes the interest while your in school.

As a poor student the only thing that helps you is financial aid. Plus there are so many universities that benefit from the programs that they will go to war if they dont get their easy financial dollars.

Tell me, in your world, would Trump be more prepared to run the country had he been a community organizer instead of the head of a multinational corporation?

You mean a Harvard Law graduate, Constitutional law professor, and 3 term senator? Yeah, I'd say that makes you marginally more qualified to be president. I didn't vote for Obama, but boy... what a stupid question.
