U.S. Department of Education Announces New Grant Program to Provide Funding to School Districts Being Penalized for Implementing COVID Safety Measures

quote:

Today, the U.S. Department of Education announced that it will launch a new grant program to provide additional funding to school districts that have funds withheld by their state or are otherwise financially penalized for implementing strategies to prevent the spread of COVID-19 consistent with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance, such as universal indoor masking. The announcement is part of President Biden's plan to combat COVID-19 and protect the health and safety of students, educators, families, and school communities

I am at a loss for words how the dept can unilaterally decide who to give funding to without a rational basis. Our legislature has given up all control and must just give these departments all funding for any purpose

I hope Florida files a lawsuit

Would be interesting to see how states handle ISDs, that they have ultimate control over, that are colluding with the feds to create these potential work arounds.

Explain how you can give one district money simply because of pay?

Also, you missed the part about no oversight and no strings. Biden just told them to give money.

The state has the authority to refuse that money. These are state employees not federal

Also these are not teachers nor is it a school but administrators

Sorry you can’t comprehend that

So DeSantis has found a way to create more budget surplus for his state.

Too bad the milquetoast Republicans won't eliminate this useless department if (or when) their party control Congress and the Presidency.

Theres's discretionary funds involved. Discretionary.

Again, it is discretionary and they gave the rationale that these schools were unfairly penalized. (from their POV)

The school districts can accept the money.

Sure. I guess you'll be shocked when it happens and there's nothing Desantis can do about it.

DeSantis should send the FSP to arrest every federal D of Ed employee in the State of Florida for interfering with public health policies of the State and inducing illegal activities.

Is an unconstitutional branch that has no authority to exist. Education is 100% left to states.

So, the department can give one administrator million just because. That is your definition of discretionary

Sorry, does not work that way

Because of a reason that is at their discretion, yes. It is literally how it works.

Yet, here we are seeing it work that way.
