Number 19 running from the wave.

Rep. Peter DeFazio (D-Ore.) on Wednesday announced he planned to retire from Congress, becoming the 19th House Democrat to opt against running for reelection in 2022.

“It’s time for me to pass the baton to the next generation so I can focus on my health and well-being. This was a tough decision at a challenging time for our republic with the very pillars of our democracy under threat, but I am bolstered by the passion and principles of my colleagues in Congress and the ingenuity and determination of young Americans who are civically engaged and working for change," DeFazio said in a statement.

The congressman, who serves a the chair of the Transportation Committee, said that he will continue to work on passing President Biden's social and climate spending bill, known as the Build Back Better Act, during the remainder of his term.

“I still have a lot of work to do in my remaining 13 months and I’ll be putting all of my efforts into that work, including helping to pass the Build Back Better Act that will bring down costs for families, create jobs, fight the climate crisis and help Americans get ahead," he said.

Gonna have to use up money to try to hold this seat.

In addition, Democrats are widely expected to lose their slim majority in the House in 2022, the kind of factor that frequently helps motivate lawmakers to retire. He will be the 19th House Democrat so far to have announced plans to leave after 2022.

DeFazio’s district is large and ideologically diverse, going for Clinton by just 0.1 percentage points in 2016 and for Biden by just 4 points in 2020. DeFazio himself recently faced his toughest race in years, winning with just a five-point margin.

The competition will be over the Democrat nomination. The Democrat will win by a wide margin.

Skarlatos was going to win whether defazio ran or not. He's just saving himself the embarrassment.

Alek Skarlatos had already announced he was running again in 2022. With DeFazio retiring, he will most likely win now. In 2020 he finished with 46.3% of the vote against DeFazio's 51.6%.

In 2020, he had one of the most savage ads of the campaign season:

If lawless, rioting, hordes looting and burning cities, and Dimocrats rigging elections count as 'pillars of democracy', then he's damn right they're under threat. On life support even. We're going to grind those 'pillars' into dust.
