Data warehouses & water usage

An average data warehouse uses around 5M gallons of water per day.
That is the equivalent of 3 1-acre lakes that average 5 feet deep.
They tend to put these data warehouses out west in the desert.
Seems like we would hear more about these negative environmental impacts.

All to store untold terabytes of pictures and videos people take via their smartphone.

A surprise number are in Virginia and North Carolina. Some of the world’s largest bandwidths are in small towns in NC and VA.
I’d hazard a guess that the biggest problem isn’t the water they use, but rather the power they consume and I’m sure their use of rare earth materials isn’t small either.

Isn't the water recycled through heat exchanges??

Otherwise know as the cloud. Should be called the oasis instead if the "cloud" is located in the desert.

Dude these are generally closed/semiclosed loop systems. You may be using that water and need it on hand, but its recycled back into the same pond.
