Not sure, but this was purely political by Edwards. "Dems, look what I did at LSU". Louisiana Republicans that voted for Edwards are morons. Maybe dumber than LA Dems. "I'm a republican, but I am going to vote against my self interest because that republican is weird or cheated". What morons.

The governor appoints the board. A republican can get a new board and thus a new president of LSU.
Of course, that would be racist, because blacks can’t be fired.
