It is a weird "cause and effect", thing. It made the news because he had an affair ("sex sells"). Therefore, casual political observers assume that was also the reason he was impeached. It was also the cornerstone of the laughable defense presented by the Dems and their allies in the media.
Sure, covering up the affair was the reason for all the illegal conduct, but that conduct was the justification for the impeachment.

Not only that, it all began because of a sexual harassment suit against Clinton. Clinton had a pattern as a predator and he lied during that investigation about a predatory relationship with not only a subordinate but an intern.

Well that is one opinion. Nobody will ever really know but Clinton’s policies were pretty popular in 2000 and Gore was getting credit for that and distancing himself from Clinton’s negative personal stuff and still lost. His approval went down the more he was in the public eye. Partly why he never ran for office again due to his own internal polling he had done in 2003 to consider running in 2004.
If Clinton steps aside or is impeached the Republicans would have kept investigating. Gore would have had to pardon him (piss off half the country) or not pardon him (piss off his base).
Everybody remembers how bush won Florida but Gore won New Mexico by like 300 votes and Iowa and Wisconsin by less than .3%.

Are you talking about Monica Lewinski or Paula Jones?
Because Clinton wasn't impeached for lying about Lewisnki "to the American people." He was impeached for lying about it in the context of an official legal proceeding as it was relevant to showing a pattern of behavior in Paula Jone's case against him for sexual harassment.
He was impeached, in other words, for lying to the court to avoid a civil judgement against himself.

I almost got myself in trouble.
I was being escorted by 6 Marine Corps Officers. We had looked into the Oval Office. Clintons didn't allow anyone in. We are in the hallway coming out of the West Wing. Bush Admin ......I couldn't help myself. Colors changed in the Oval Office ......
"I see they couldn't get the Monica stains out of the carpet." The younger Marines got called out for not being able to contain themselves.
Then I got my turn at the house. My Son in Law (Captain) said "You really got to tone it down inside the White House. But it was very good."

He shouldn't have had to be in the situation to be impeached. The Republicans really wanted a win at the time. And then he perjured himself.
