A lot of companies don't do the latter. In regards to what you're saying, I hope that Musk realizes the value of it.

One of the forums that I worked for, had backups of all the private messages.
It wasn't something that we ever used against members. It would have been a breach of privacy, and would have caused mistrust against the site.
But. When Musk bought the company. I'm pretty sure that a lot of the screeching was out of fear of himaking those messages and posts public!
