I want to say this guy needs to become a Republican right now but like Zell Miller back in the day, we're better off with him being "on their side".

No way Fetterman can win a D primary with the makeup of whackos that vote D.
In the Northeast? I think it betters his odds because the proliferation of Democrats up there helps carry their messaging further. The Powers That Be (those running the party) have been pushing an increasingly Leftist-extremist view (open borders, sex changes for kids, cashless bail, etc) and as such it's turning away a lot of more traditional or moderate Democrats. Along with that, the deeper you get into the extreme, the more virulent the supporters of those causes become, which is also a turnoff.
Then you have someone like Fetterman come along in a purple-ish state. Not only does he come across as being the only adult in the Dem's gang in Congress (which is helped by how the media likes him) but he's not following lock-step with the party dictates. While I'm sure there are a LOT who aren't going to vote for him because of his pro-tranny stance, there will also be a LOT who will vote for him because he's one of the few Dems in Congress to come out against open borders, against the endless wars, etc.
There are undoubtedly those who will vote Dem party line regardless of the candidate/incumbent, just as there are those who do that on the GOP side of the aisle (looking at you, Kentucky). They may hold their nose and pick the least offensive candidate, but their having an option of a Fetterman versus another Squad member is going to be like manna from Heaven for them.
And the biggest thing going for him, if I'm right about this, is that he's the only one doing it (at least to this degree). I think it's an overlooked and underestimated niche that at least tries to scratch the itch many (at least on the Left) have for wanting a candidate who isn't radicalized to the extreme on every topic.
