It's pretty fricking amusing that none of them even responded to that post.

Our federal government was funded by tariffs.

quote:Except the difference isn't 10% as you suggest. It's 300% on many goods. So a 100% tariff doesn't do isht. It's still cheaper to produce overseas, and since theres no domestic production, the 100% can easily be passed on to consumers. WINNING!
Company A sells a product for $100. Due to tariffs, they would have to sell it for $110. That would put them at a disadvantage to other companies inside the USA. If only there was a way to avoid the tariffs.

Therefore, the tariffs have nothing to do with the price.

The US needs tariffs to balance the trade deficit.
quote:Whyt? Be sure to include the relative value of currencies. Simple question. Why would you assert that the nation with the strongest currency on the planet have no trade deficit?
Whether you call it subsidies for American companies or not does not change the fact that the trade deficit must be fixed.

quote:No. It didn't. Expensive labor, a hostile regulatory and legal envrionment moved capital investment over seas.
Free trade moved money out of the USA.

Mythical trade deficit. Did we not anything in return?

No. Their currency is shite and their economy is unstable. It's not comparable to a developed country with a real currency, let alone the #1 economy with the #1 currency

2. Company moves overseas. Man loses job. Man gets new job in a service industry making 45k with no retirement benefits or good insurance.
quote:They aren't 10% cheaper. They are 300% cheaper than they would be if made in America with "man" making 70k a year with retirement and benefits.
3. Man gets told outsourcing is a good thing because he can now buy that product 10% cheaper and it’s good for the consumer. Never mind outsourcing caused a 30% pay cut for him
People way understimate the differential of foreign production. You think the 10% PRICE difference you see at the store represents the difference. It's not. The COST difference is almost always far greater.

And even beyond that, the entire purpose of tariffs is to raise prices to make domestic production "competitive". Or... are you going to argue that tariffs don't work?
