Either we were rich and had tariffs or we did not.
This isn't cauasality. Like I pointed out, we also used typewriters instead of the internet back then too. Why not return to using typewriters and paper mail? We'll be rich again!

Company A sells a product for $100. Due to tariffs, they would have to sell it for $110. That would put them at a disadvantage to other companies inside the USA. If only there was a way to avoid the tariffs.
Except the difference isn't 10% as you suggest. It's 300% on many goods. So a 100% tariff doesn't do isht. It's still cheaper to produce overseas, and since theres no domestic production, the 100% can easily be passed on to consumers. WINNING!

quote:

Therefore, the tariffs have nothing to do with the price.
The entire purpose of tariffs is to raise prices. If prices aren't increased, the only alternative is for domestic workers to have a lower income. A is A.

The US needs tariffs to balance the trade deficit.
This is ONLY possible if we pay more for goods. By definition.

Whether you call it subsidies for American companies or not does not change the fact that the trade deficit must be fixed.
Whyt? Be sure to include the relative value of currencies. Simple question. Why would you assert that the nation with the strongest currency on the planet have no trade deficit?

Free trade moved money out of the USA.
No. It didn't. Expensive labor, a hostile regulatory and legal envrionment moved capital investment over seas.

Mythical trade deficit. Did we not anything in return?
I swear some of them think we have to repay it.

No. Their currency is shite and their economy is unstable. It's not comparable to a developed country with a real currency, let alone the #1 economy with the #1 currency
I wish I'd kept a count of how many times I've asked them why they'd expect a nation with the worlds strongest curreny would NOT be running a large trade deficit. Because they never answer. Gotta be a 100x by now.

2. Company moves overseas. Man loses job. Man gets new job in a service industry making 45k with no retirement benefits or good insurance.
And is still too expensive in an competitive market. If "man" wants to do the same work a Chinese, Vietnamese, Fillipino, etc. worker can do equally well for a LOT more money... "man" is going to have a hard time.

quote:

3. Man gets told outsourcing is a good thing because he can now buy that product 10% cheaper and it’s good for the consumer. Never mind outsourcing caused a 30% pay cut for him
They aren't 10% cheaper. They are 300% cheaper than they would be if made in America with "man" making 70k a year with retirement and benefits.

People way understimate the differential of foreign production. You think the 10% PRICE difference you see at the store represents the difference. It's not. The COST difference is almost always far greater.

That's what makes it so fascinating. They think they're proving they're right, while showing they are clueless. It's amazing.

He gave you math. You didn't refute a single bit of it. It is what it is.

Literally in the link. What you're seem to be asking is for someone else to understand it for you. No once can do that.

And even beyond that, the entire purpose of tariffs is to raise prices to make domestic production "competitive". Or... are you going to argue that tariffs don't work?
