He did no such thing. The US legally, but not wisely, sold arms for hostages with Iran.
What North did was use the profits from said arms sales to support the Contras in Nicaragua despite this being restricted by the Democrat controlled Congress.
The Democrats were supporting the communist Sandinistas who were aligned with Cuba and the USSR.
Reagan opposed the spread of the “Evil Empire” especially in the Americas.
The Democrats were trying to link Reagan to the Iran-Contra scandal. They gave North immunity for his testimony. It blew up in their faces when North testified that he was totally responsible for the money transfer without White House knowledge! LOL
North was initially convicted on three felony charges, but the convictions were vacated and reversed and all charges against him dismissed in 1991, on the grounds of immunity.
