This is a Catholic thing.

The Greek Orthodox church controls it.

My 80 year old mother made a pilgrimage to the Holy land.
Israeli soldiers would not allow praying out loud at Holy sites.
She also had to put her rosary away.

My 70-year-old Pentecostal Holiness MIL went there. She expected to find an elaborate nativity scene. She came home pissed off because that is not what it is all about.

None of that explains why it’s happening now and hadn’t previously.

It has happened previously. You're just ignorant of it (until now).

It happens all the time.

There are even Christians fighting other Christians there.

they are just as much enemies of Christ as the Muslim or atheist at this point.

Christ didn’t have enemies; he loved all.

All who hate Christ are His enemies. All Christians were said to be His enemies prior to Him saving us. Also, Jesus said that we are to love our enemies, so love and having enemies are not mutually exclusive.

But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet. -Heb.10:12-13

Then comes the end, when he delivers the kingdom to God the Father after destroying every rule and every authority and power. For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. The last enemy to be destroyed is death. -1 Cor. 15:24-26

Then I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse! The one sitting on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he judges and makes war. His eyes are like a flame of fire, and on his head are many diadems, and he has a name written that no one knows but himself. He is clothed in a robe dipped in blood, and the name by which he is called is The Word of God. And the armies of heaven, arrayed in fine linen, white and pure, were following him on white horses. From his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations, and he will rule them with a rod of iron. He will tread the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God the Almighty. On his robe and on his thigh he has a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords. -Rev.:19:11-16

I will tell of the decree:
The LORD said to me, “You are my Son;
today I have begotten you.
Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage,
and the ends of the earth your possession.
You shall break them with a rod of iron
and dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel.”

Sounds a lot like Islam. Hopefully he meant that figuratively.

God made his covenant with them. But with Christ his new covenant was made with all who believe in him.

At the end of the age when Jesus returns, all knees will bow and all tongues will confess that He is King of kings and Lord of lords, and all those who have not trusted in Him will be thrown into Hell for eternity. That’s what that verse means.

I doubt it’s true, but maybe.
