BR Council Woman pins op-ed in Advocate

This is the reason why NBR will fail. She thinks government can fix societal problems. It was never designed to and we certainly don't have the leaders in place capable of even trying.

My favorite part is that in her ridiculous analogy, a father is nowhere to be found.

She states....

"In the past 10 years and even today, the northern part of Baton Rouge has been systematically subjected to political, economic, cultural or social degradation because its residents are majority black. It is inflicted with several forms of discrimination: economic, recreation, retail, housing, media and infrastructure."

Until the attitude of the black community (and it's leaders) shifts from that of perpetual victimhood to a mindset of personal responsibility, their community will forever be afflicted by "degradation". FACT!

The black community in a lot of cities are completely broken. Out of wedlock births are sky. That needs to stop first and foremost.

Single parent households living on the government dime should be a last resort, not be a way of life.

Most importantly, that's all she does.

She didn't provide even ONE example supporting her assertion

The majority of this time there was a black, democrat mayor. Still is.

What is she trying to say?

We need city leaders, particularly a mayor that is not trying to serve ALL the people in Baton Rouge equally. Because all the people and communities in Baton Rouge do not need the special attention during these perilous times.

So is she down for St. George, or does she only care about NBR and believe that serving people equally is below the great city of BR?

Most in North Baton Rouge that are employed are in the public sector - despite North Baton Rouge being home to one of the largest private sector employers in the region. Most homes there fall below the minimum value for homestead exemption so they avoid property taxes. Distressed inner city neighborhoods like North Baton Rouge consume more public safety, Medicaid, and public health funding per capita than more stable areas.

There is now a dedicated tax district for North Baton Rouge that will ultimately go to paying consultant fees and salaries for people connected to the mayor.

South Baton Rouge isn't causing the issues in North Baton Rouge. North Baton Rouge is.

She would be appalled to know how much federal, state, and local monies are spent on the residents of North Baton Rouge.

Does she think we should build a mall?

Does she think a large office complex would be successful?

It would be fantastic to see north Baton Rouge succeed. I doubt, however, she has a clue what this might entail or would even like how an actual redevelopment might take shape.

Cool.... But why doesn't she speak ok the degradation of historically white neighborhoods like Sherwood or Broadmoor due to migration of black people in the last 20 years? It's not a lack of funding that's leaving these places in ruins; it's a lack of civility, character and leadership. Face it black people of BR- pretty much everything you touch turns to shite

Despite the repeated demonstrations of this statement to be FACT.....blacks will NEVER admit it because it doesn't fit the narrative of them being "victims"!!!

It may one day, but at that point it would be well within a gentrification process with outside investors pouring in.

I have a feeling that the racist that wrote the op-ed would have a major problem with that too.

Her letter isn't a statement of fact. It's a political rally call for north Baton Rouge.

Every time I hear her speak or read her opinion it sounds more and more like she thinks NBR deserves all of East Baton Rouge Parish's tax dollars.

As I said in the OP, tax dollars do not change culture. They change infrastructure. Until the PEOPLE on NBR make a concerted effort to rid their area of drugs and blight, nothing will change
