A Boeing pilot who tested the 737 Max jet in flight simulators in 2016 admitted in a series of text messages that he lied to the Federal Aviation Administration regarding the plane’s performance.
The text messages, reviewed by the New York Times, show that the lead technical pilot for the plane, Mark Forkner, was having trouble with an automated flight system known as MCAS. Malfunctions with MCAS caused two 737 Max jets to crash, killing a total of 346 people.

“It’s running rampant in the sim,” Forkner wrote to a colleague, referring to the simulation. “Granted, I suck at flying, but even this was egregious.”
Eight months prior to the messages, Forkner had asked the F.A.A. to remove the MCAS from the 737 Max pilot’s manual. The F.A.A. approved the request, believing the system didn’t present a danger.
“I basically lied to the regulators (unknowingly),” Forkner texted.
Boeing had provided transcripts of the texts to the Justice Department earlier this year as part of a criminal investigation. The transcript was provided to Congress on Friday in advance of hearings this month at which Boeing chief executive Dennis A. Muilenburg is scheduled to testify on the crashes for the first time.

I wonder if this test pilot was under pressure to give answers to help the new software slide through quality control?

Once this was disclosed, they didn't come forward.

That opens them up to significant liability.

He didn't "unknowingly" do anything. He flat out lied.

Boeing did send it over the the Justice Department earlier this year. DOJ has had it for 9 months.

Congress just received it ahead of their hearings.

They didnt disclose it during the training phase in 2016 and over 300 people died in 2018 and 2019.

They're fricked.

How do you LIE unknowingly. The very definition of lying is willful intent to give false information.

If you give inaccurate information without knowledge of its falseness you cannot lie. You are stupid, misinformed or mislead or something.

Yeah. It wasn't a lie, but misinformation.

But it became a lie after he knew he provided false information and didn't disclose it to the FAA.

“Granted, I suck at flying,”

Is that the test pilot saying that? And if so, is that the norm for a test pilot to “suck” at flying?

I think it was self deprecating humor.

Somebodies going to jail for this, and they should. They placed into operation a faulty and dangerous automated flight program. Killed a lot of people.

Wait. Didn’t he talk to the regulators well before he ran those sims?

Yes.

But didn't alert them once he realized it was a major issue.
