The rent control issue has everything to do with illegal immigration. In CA for instance, companies can "sponsor" workers but they need somewhere to house them. This is a really great article explaining how that policy drives up the rent costs and reduces housing availability for citizens. LINK

Average rent in San Francisco is three times the national average. They have pretty much priced a certain class of American out of the city. Also known as the progressive way.
