Will Smith turned down the lead in Django Unleashed to do After Earth because he thought Christopher Waltz was the true star of the movie and didn’t want to be overshadowed.
While Waltz did get recognized for his role, Django was a huge hit and helped solidify Jamie Foxx as a box office draw.

He also passed on The Matrix to do Wild Wild West. Keanu Reeves was a star already, but the Matrix made him a megastar. Wild Wild West was a terrible flop. Smith would do some big/huge films after that, so his start wasn't crushed. But his assessment of films hasn't been all that great, especially in recent memory.

Agreed. Having a Jedi trained "overnight" is not the right way. A long slow "chase" scene is not the right way. Lot's wrong with TLJ that had an effect on Solo.

The problem isn’t imagination, the problem is a combination of politics and wanting to put too much of a personal stamp on things.
The Last Jedi was specifically a problem because Rian Johnson was given free reign to kill of virtually all connections to the previous trilogies and disregard existing canon just because he wanted to.
Episode IX is now in the Matrix Revolutions position of having to un-frick everything screwed up by the last film while also telling a new story.
In the case of Revolutions, it was having to solve the “wham” at the end of Reloaded where Neo had Matrix powers in real life.
In Episode IX, it will be trying to have any form of continuity considering the Rebel braintrust was killed off save Leia, whose actress has since died, on top of trying to figure out how to salvage all the Jedi stuff involving Rey, Kylo Ren, etc. considering they did a poor man’s Empire / Jedi through the relationship of Rey and Ren as well as the one between Ren and Snoke.
And IMHO the reason to cut all ties to the previous trilogy was identity politics at its core because the only legacy character remaining was Leia. Luke, Ackbar, etc, were all males and generally white so they had to die to make way for ethnic replacements.

Wild Wild West was a turd but let’s not pretend that The Matrix was expected to be a mega hit out of the box.
Half of Hollywood passed on roles in it for various reasons, including but not limited to the amount of martial arts training required of them and the fact that the Wachowskis and Joel Silver didn’t have a great track record.
Silver’s star was on the wane at that time because he had lot had a hit besides Lethal Weapon sequels since Demolition Man.
The Wachowskis had only written Assassins, which bombed, as well as writing, directing, and executive producing Bound which was a successful indie film. The belief in them as big budget directors wasn’t there yet.
By contrast, Django was a Quentin Tarantino picture co-starring Leo DiCaprio, Samuel L Jackson, and Christopher Waltz.
Tarantino’s track record is excellent, with the main box office misstep being Grindhouse (Death Proof) while his three costars all had Oscar nominations or wins under their belt.
In the other corner, we have After Earth, co-written by Smith, starring his unseasoned actor son, and directed by M Night at one of the lowest points of his career coming after the bombs The Village, Lady In The Water, The Happening, and The Last Airbender.
