Influence doesn't equal 'control'.
Do I, a DJT supporter, hope he can help to smooth things over? Yes.
Do I feel his legacy would be less if he were unable to control the actions of other, grown, strong personality leaders? An emphatic 'No'.
My daughter and my Aunt have been having a row for about two years now... my aunt is 82 and I'd love to see that resolved before it is too late. I've tried to influence both of them to let it go and move on. They are both hard headed as all get out.
I can try, I can influence... I cannot compel.
Trump has more ability to compel than do I... but in the end, every person makes and is responsible for their own actions.

Agree with everything you're saying
But we all know that if the Russia/Ukraine war does come to an end soon that he will take credit for it. And if he plays a role in it he very well should take some credit.
