Anti Immigration Art Through the Ages

The Unrestricted Dumping Ground
A Judge cartoon from 1903, playing to fears of socialism, anarchism and the Mafia, imported “direct from the slums of Europe daily.” The background figure is that of the late President William McKinley, who was assassinated by the son of an immigrant two
years earlier. Judge was a leading Republican magazine of the time, and was forever fretting about the effects of polluting the native racial strain---especially since most of the immigrants, once they won the vote, tended to vote for Democrats.
The Immigrant
The Immigrant” (1903) “Is he an acquisition or a detriment?” So asks this timeless Judge cartoon, in which the man just off the boat is a mute witness to the debate swirling around him: “He is a menace;” “He brings me cheap labor;” “He cheapens my labor;” “He brings disease;” “He is brawn and muscle for my country;” “He makes votes for me;” and finally, “He is a puzzle to me.” No one seems more puzzled by the cacophony than the immigrant himself.
Declined With Thanks
Declined With Thanks” (1895) The never-ending debate on “Americanization” (or “assimilation”) versus “clannishness,” which spilled over into the political campaigns of the period (“Rum, Romanism, and Rebellion” was the Republican cry of 1884), is well represented in this Puck image of Spider ( The Pope) beckoning Fly (Miss Columbia) into his web. The public school in the background is Miss Columbia’s response. See also "Freethinkers' Pictorial Textbook---The Shadow in Our Schools," in the "Radical, Reform, and Marxist" poster category

A Statue for Our Harbor (1881)
From "The Wasp", one of George Frederick Keller's two most famous images. The dirt is in the details: The rats scurrying about the statue's pedestal; the junks; the "Chinese" moon; the opium pipe; and the beams of light emanating from the statue's head, labeled "Ruin to White Labor;" "Diseases;" "Immorality;" and "Filth." The real Statue of Liberty, with its somewhat more upbeat view of immigrants, was still three years from completion at this point.
An Ideal 17th of March (1885)
AKA "Every Irishman Has His Day," we suppose. A sublime image of a bomb-wielding Paddy basking in his royal carriage, being carried by representatives of every immigrant group, in addition to a thoroughly disgusted Uncle Sam. From "The Wasp".
Immigration a National Menace (Judge, 1903)
A cartoon which serves more or less as a companion piece to "The Unrestricted Dumping Ground," a similar Dalrymple Judge cartoon from the same year. Uncle Sam still looks out, apparently helpless, at an endless swarm of stiletto-bearing rats ("Mafia;" "Anarchist;" etc.) washing up on the shore in a high tide of "Riff-Raff Immigration."

Looking Backward
“Looking Backward” A Puck cartoon from 1893 with sentiments 180 degrees opposite from “The Unrestricted Dumping Ground” Judge cartoon from ten years later. This one shows an immigrant stepping off the ship, only to be greeted by the forbidding figures, in their bourgeois splendor, telling him to go back where he came from. The kicker, though, is in the shadows lurking behind those forbidding figures: It’s the representation of their own ragged selves, and their ancestors, at the time of their own arrival! The caption nicely summarizes the point: “They would close to the new-comer the bridge that carried them and their fathers over.” Sound familiar?
The Cause of It All1897 Judge cartoon.

The Shadow in Our Schools
Freethinkers' Pictorial Text-Book (1890)- "The Shadow in Our Schools". At the time of the great wave of immigration from the Catholic countries of Europe, there was an ongoing undercurrent of resentment about the "Romanization" of the public school system. Elsewhere on this site we have "Puck" and "Judge" cartoons with a more mainstream (i.e. Protestant) view on the subject, but the truth is that in their views on the Pope they weren't much different than the Atheists, as you can see by comparing the images
The Coming [Monopoly] Man (1881)

A little History real quick
quote:
The American Protective Association, a nativist anti-Catholic organization, peaked in 1894 at 500,000 memebers, and they engaged in seeking political power and to displace urban Democratic machines. The APA railed about the Popish Plots--Their growth can be seen as a presage to militant nationalism and a shift of hostilities to Southern Europeans, for example, the New Orleans lynching of 11 Italians, which precipitated an international incident in 1891. Same year, Republicans lead the drive for immigration restriction, establishing federal control, building reception center at Ellis Island. Antiradicalism became a cornerstone of nativism. Many believed that immigrants brought European radicalism with them to America, and they especially blamed the newcomers for fomenting the labor unrest that characterized much of the period. The role immigrants played in the communist, socialist, and anarchist movements also helped convince many Americans that unless the country restricted immigration, radicals from abroad might soon dominate the United States. In 1894 the Immigration Restriction League was formed in Boston.
Race Thinking: two veins of thought--1. a nationalistic political/literary version of the inner vitality of one’s culture, rather than the menace of another (the Volk theory); 2. the Naturalist physiologically based racial science, e.g. the exploitation of Darwin to label inferiority as explanation for lack of success.
The connection began in the 1880s when Anglo-Saxon nativism correlated with anti-Radical nativism against labor/social upheavals; in the 20th c. the emphasis transformed from radical foreigners to radical foreign races.
Two sides to the coin of racial nationalism:
1. the domestic--fear and anger with the foreigner within
2. international--the “white man’s burden” to civilize (conquer) the uncivilized.
The opposition comes from the Progressives--optimistic and believers in environmental conditioning rather than racial determinism. To meet progressive’s arguments more effectively, Anglo Saxon nativists turned to new scientific backing, e.g. Mendel’s scientific heredity, Galton’s eugenics. Eventually the most important contribution of an anthropological pseudo-scientific typology by Madison Grant, who touted the fear of race suicide and a crude theory of racial pollution. Grant made RACE the supreme value.
Chinese exclusion.: The first laws enacted to restrict immigration affected only Asians. Congress prohibited immigration from China for ten years starting in 1882 and banned it permanently in 1902. President Theodore Roosevelt concluded a "gentle man's agreement" with Japan in 1907 that excluded immigrants from that country.

Let us do a interesting comparison here. All immigrant groups have their share of people that are annoying or really pus hour buttons. That is natural. Anti immigration groups use this to make people get emotional. THE WHOLE THEY ARE ALL ALIKE. The whole purpose is to get you FEELINGGGGGGG instead of thinking.
Here is a popular image we see today
Now lets compare to this
There are various other images of Angry Irishman demanding this and demanding that in papers I ahve found.

Caption: "The Anti-Chinese Wall"
Source: Puck
Date: unknown
Artist: F. Graetz
Second caption reads: "The American Wall Goes Up as the Chinese Original Comes Down."
Although the ugliest and most racist caricatures are probably those of Chinese, here caricature is utilized sympathetically, showing the irony of European immigrants helping Uncle Sam to prohibit immigration from China.
Each brick bears a reason that the Chinese were not accepted in this country.
Top row: "Chinese, Negro, Irish, Italian, Russian, German, French"
Middle row: "Spanish, Boer, Indian, Swede, Greek, Turk"
Bottom row: " Alaskan, Hawaiian, Russian Jew, Jap, Filipino"
Caption: "The Father of Our Country as Seen by His Children"
Source: Life
Date: February 21, 1907
Artist: William H. Walker
These cartoons are not easily understood unless they are viewed in historical context. The depiction of Theodore Roosevelt as "Filipino" (lower right corner of cartoon) refers to the recent acquisition of the Philippene Islands at the close of the Spanish-American War.
Caption: "Uncle Sam is a Man of Strong Features"
Source: Judge
Date: November 26, 1888
Artist: Grant Hamilton

A few more pic for those that have Irish blood
These cartoons from an 1881 issue of Puck depict common held negative views of most Irish-Americans.
Thomas Nast cartoon from 1870 expressing the worry that the Irish Catholics threatened the American freedom
A cartoon from the 1850s by the "Know-Nothings" accusing the Irish and German immigrants of negatively affecting an election.

Excellent thread, Rant. But the immigration issue we have today deals with critical mass. There has never been a time in US immigration history when tens of millions of immigrants came over illegally, settled in their own neighborhoods, refused to learn the language, refused to assimilate and then turned to such high rates of criminality.

What a terrible trip down memory lane. I almost wish I hadn't looked at these images. Lots to think about here, and its not real pretty.
Found you by way of MichaelMedved.com by the way. He has been one of the very few voices of sanity on the airwaves, throughout the national brawl over immigration.
Whoever you are, thanks for unearthing these images. This is information Americans need to know, but do not necessarily want to recall.

Funny how that is a real picture and not a work of art though right?

Wow thanks. I saw that this thread got linked on the Anchoress site. I had no idea that Michael Medved had linked to this a thread on the LSU political board that is pretty exciting
Yeah Medved has been a rock of sanity in this.
THe reason I picked these pictures is so show a couple of things.
First that often the same arguments we hear today we heard yesterday. What was alluded to as to the Irish and Italians is what we hear today.
Second, I get will upset when people don't recognize their own heritage. In a state like Louisiana that infuriates me. People forget the largest lynching in the South was in New Orleans had as its victims Italian and Siclian immigrants. 11 died. THat was one of many.Yet in a State that still has traditions of St Joesph Altars, I hear Italians make arguments against Hispanics that just make me wonder if they have a clue. I am sure some of their Great Grandparents are rolling in their graves. It all repeats. The same old fears were on display then against new commers and the fact that they were not "asismilating".
I don't want to say the this immigrant group does not have challenges it needs to work on. BUt the hysteria is a replay of old times. NOthing new and that includes the whiff of evil one can smell.

Because I stated a fact?
It's not like I said that this thread was worthless. I just don't see the point of an exercise where a real picture is compared to propaganda art. It's comparing apples to oranges.
