Another huge SCOTUS ruling could come this week re: school choice

The Supreme Court appeared closely split during oral arguments Wednesday in a case with potentially major implications for the school choice movement, as the justices -- including Chief Justice John Roberts, who presided over President Trump's impeachment trial the previous night until 2 a.m. -- sparred with the lawyers and each other.
The case, Espinoza v. Montana Department of Revenue, centers around a tax-credit scholarship program passed in May 2015 that gave Montanans up to a $150 credit for donating to private scholarship organizations, helping students pay for their choice of private schools. The state's revenue department made a rule banning those tax-credit scholarships from going to religious schools before the state's supreme court later struck down the entire law.

This is where Biden stands

When we divert public funds to private schools, we undermine the entire public education system. We've got to prioritize investing in our public schools, so every kid in America gets a fair shot. That's why I oppose vouchers. #Espinoza
School Choice is 100% winning issue for the GOP.
If you truly want to connect with minorities (especially mothers) this is one issue they care about.

I have a bad feeling about this one also..
If the SCOTUS rules against school choice, it will be clear they are effectively a leftist court.
...and then it will be clear there is something rotten in Denmark going on with these recent rulings

Roberts is trying to play both sides. He'll pick school choice on this one, then come up with some BS on something else

Of my liberal friends, many are pro-school choice. They even identify this as a losing issue for Democrats.

Perhaps...but I still an not sure if these rulings will piss off the good guys to put the GOP over the top in November or whether they will demoralize our base

DO NOT count on Roberts doing the right thing.

Can someone explain school choice to me?
I grew up in EBR parish so I understand how the schools are set up. It is a little different since places like Central are now their own system.
I'm here in DFW and they have an ISD approach which is essentially a community or group of communities have the kids go to schools in that area.
How would school choice affect these two situations?

Pretty simple. Allow kids access to other public schools outside of their district. I'll bet a lot of states already have some type of program in place. I know in Boise, Idaho you could request to go to just about any public school and I never heard anybody say they were rejected.

How does that work in places like here in TX? We pay a frick ton in property taxes which mostly go to the ISD. Does the ISD get compensated to bring in students whose property taxes are used at that ISD?

I don't think they have a policy like I just stated in DFW area. Funny enough I live here and don't have a clue about any of the public schools. I do know that demand for charter school slots has skyrocketed according to my friends with kids in school. So my guess is the controls are pretty strict.

I'm sure those that live in the Dallas ISD and want better for their kids are pushing for something else.

parents would be able to choose where to send their kids (and the state and fed $$$ for that kid). So if you are in a bad school district you could pull your kid out and send them to a better school (public or private) and the money allotted for that kid would go to the new school not the bad one.
The only reason to be against it is that it would force schools to be better and the teachers would have to work to teach the students not coast by. That is why the left hates it, the teachers and teacher unions would have to start doing work.

As long as the money is being diverted to the new school system and they are able to handle the increased student population, I'm on board with it.
