Hamas isn’t ISIS. The two religions have largely gotten along from the beginning. There are millions of Christians in Lebanon and Egypt. Lebanon was majority Christian until its civil war. Syria had a much larger population of Christians before its civil war.

Hot take: I don't think we should defend Israel here, I also don't think Israel is making some state policy choice to try and kill Catholics because they're Jews and hate Christians
My best guess is that if not an accident, this Catholic Church was seen as an antagonist of the IDF and pro-Gaza/Hamas because of ceasefire calls, attempts at humanitarian aid, etc. Not saying that's a defensible view, but I think it's a slightly different discussion.
The short of it is that Israel cares about itself and its priorities. It's a friend to the US and Christians when it has that luxury (in its mind) and/or they get something out of it. I don't think they hate us, I also don't think they have our interests at heart, and we should adjust accordingly to a similar pose (we don't hate them, we support them when we have the luxury to do so or when it serves our interest).
