Mayor: 'Ann Arbor's a welcoming community, we don't want to push people away. We want to bring folks in.'

He's talking about the removal of Neighborhood Crime Watch signs. Again, these signs are specifically made to warn criminals that they are not welcome.

Or, as Council Member Harrison puts it ... black people?

Council Member Harrison: There are people that look like me and those from my community that have been questioned, quite frankly, in their own neighborhoods by others wondering what they're doing there.

Some quotes:

'Neighborhood watch signs are an expression of exclusion'

'It really harkens back to a time when public safety was about exclusion, was about monitoring and surveilling who belonged in a neighborhood and who did not. And that is not how we do public safety in Ann Arbor today. We are a welcoming community.'

I do believe that happens more than it should.

That being said, the solution is much more about people being less trigger happy on initiating those encounters, and that’s also a function of her people owning the fact that their demo has a dramatically higher crime rate.

I’ll work on being less suspicious and you work on not giving me a reason to be.

In any case, stopping crime prevention is not the solution.
