Things are starting heat up. Debates last week and this week. Ivey is trying to run out the clock by avoiding the debates which is probably smart. However, I thought it was poor judgement on her make the excuse that she has a busy schedule as governor and she ends up throwing out the first pitch at the Barons' game instead. She has the advantage of being in office and a few million more in donations than Battle, and that might help her win the Primary but I think that strategy could hurt her in the General against Walt Maddox.

Battle just seems like a stock Republican candidate for Governor. I want to like him and he'd probably be a good Governor, but it feels like his stances are prefab and designed to not rock the boat. Would still take him over Ivey and the other two GOP candidates.

ivey looks like a fool for not debating.

i like battle. i am not sure how much of huntsville's success is due to him but he certainly seems like he has a solid track record.

I was hoping Roy Moore would run. But seriously, Ivey just seems like your garden variety Montgomery establishment politician. I'll vote for whomever the R is in the general.

How so? Does anyone besides a hardcore political junky have any interest watching a debate for governor? So she didn’t participate in the debate, and missed an opportunity to reach hundreds of voters, big deal.

I think so too unless she really sucks at it and wants to avoid the optics of having her stand next to three younger & "healthier" looking candidates. She certainly shouldn't have been at a friggin Barons game. When you add the fact that she wasn't elected and isn't going to debate, it makes her vulnerable.

That's kind of my take too. Kind of hard to screw that up. That said, he does have a good track record and has experience outside of Montgomery, which is a plus. I've long thought we needed a Mayor in that spot. Unfortunately, he endorsed Roy Moore which was a letdown for a lot of people. I still think Ivey should get all sorts of hell for her position of saying she believed the victims but was voting for Moore anyway. That's a pretty ridiculous statement when you think about it.

well to anyone paying attention skipping a debate to throw out a pitch at a baseball game is insulting. it's her choice on what she wants to do...but as a voter i def took notice.

As long as it is not my dipshit mayor I will be happy.

Walt can suck a back of aids infected dicks. (He probably already has.)

Why is this insulting? Are you seriously telling me that you actually took offense to this? She got more coverage and pub out of throwing out a pitch than she would have participating in some crappy primary debate for governor.

Because she went on rant about how important her schedule is because she's governor. The Barons even offered to reschedule it for her. Not saying we should be clutching our pearls but it isn't a good look especially since the takeaway image from the night was her trying to evade reporters who were asking her about the debate. Its like something Hillary would do.

And it doesn't matter if the debate isn't a huge deal, but it at least shows that the candidate is willing to get out of their bubble. Nothing more insulting than a politician who thinks they don't have to earn the job.

Meh,

I got to see to about 20 min of that debate last week and I think I was maybe 1 out of 300 people in the state that was watching.

She is the sitting Gov, she isn't obligated to debate anyone.

I'm not sure that I'm going to vote for her because I think the only thing she can say right now is that she hasn't fricked anything up yet.

She also didn't earn the job so its not like she gets the full benefit of being an incumbent. Kind of like Luther. She doesn't have to do anything but I think it eventually creates a narrative that could hurt her. One debate appearance takes it away. Of course maybe she'd rather deal with that because she knows that the optics of her on a debate stage could be worse.

A case can also be made that she'll need to get engage in a debate eventually if only to gin up some enthusiasm in order to avoid a close race in the Fall. This won't be like the Special Election but the Democratic candidate will probably be able to put up a better fight this time than the last 3 races.

That's a step up from a majority of our recent governors, but I'd say she fricked up the handling of the Special Election.

I'd imagine this is the case. Because as of right now she doesn't really have to run on anything other than I'm the current Gov. She might get shredded on real policy if she debated.

I forgot about that.

A debate would make her look like a bigger fool though, so there's that.

She'll get a lot of votes because she's the incumbent. Buddy of mine swears she'll have the backing of Bob Riley and all his cronies as well because they can just tell her what to do. That'll get her a lot of votes as well.

I'm all in on Walt, if for nothing else as he would be somewhat of a check on the strong majority the R's have in Congress.
