I clepped out of 101. You had to have at least a 28 ACT to take the test. There were 40 new Freshman in the exam room. They gave us a 2 paragraph section of an opinion piece from the NY Times on foreign policy. It was only about 70 words. The instructions:
'Critique the author's writing style. Not his opinion, his writing style.'
You had to write 5 pages plus outline. It was a bitch of a test. Only 3 of us passed.

The teaching "profession" died in the 80's.

How else can a high school senior be diametrically opposed to their parents beliefs without having stepped out into the real world?

Public schools everywhere have been shite for 40-plus years.
Having said that, public school students who want to learn do so.
i was raised (along with all my siblings) in public schools. However, I transferred to a small Christian high school for the 11th and 12th grades.
The difference was black and white in terms of academic accountability. The difference was life-changing for me. So much so that I vowed to only send my kids to a small Christian school.
The result was incredible. I have one son who is a commercial pilot who scored a 48 on the Wonderlic and another who finished his MBA (finance) in 1/3 time. He interviewed with five companies and got four offers.
The key to educating the young is accountability and the ability to focus on academics. This only occurs if social issues and distractions are eliminated.

This is apparent at a lot of levels. Right now, I am teaching a middle school in OK. I just have cheap 2 handed clock hanging on the wall. I be 80% of my students cant look at the clock and tell me what time it is. Who knew the ability to read a clock would become a forgotten skill.
On the upper level math problems, I have taught Alg II for several years. The majority of kids are extremely technology dependent to do any kind of calculations. I would have juniors that couldnt tell me what 6x9 is equal to. The kids look for the easy way out using apps like photomath, mathway, etc. I would warn them about using the easy way out on homework because when they would take a test, i would be able to tell if they learned anything.
