A guy walks into a bar...

My view of this Iran-backdown business:
A guy walks into a bar, he's somewhat smallish and suffers from Little Man Syndrome so he's loud, abrasive and has a history of trying to taunt people into fights without throwing the first punch. His only real claim of physical dominance is to bully his siblings. We'll call him "Hassan"
A super-heavyweight MMA champion and his wife are also in the bar. This guy 6'7", 300lbs of solid muscle and is a master in pretty much every fighting style known to man. We'll call him "Uncle Sam", or just "Sam" for short.
Hassan sees Sam's wife waiting at the bar for a drink and starts hitting on her. She politely rebuffs him but as she turns to leave he grabs her arm to hold her there. Sam sees this and walks over with the intent to knock this guy the frick out. Instead, at the last minute, he decides to give Hassan a chance to walk away. He knows that if he starts the fight over just this then the rest of the night is ruined (getting thrown out of the bar, maybe arrested, possibly sued by Hassan, etc) so instead of going with violence first he steps between his wife and Hassan and gives Hassan that "you are an inch away from serious pain" stare.
The choice is now in Hassan's hands. Does he settle with a staredown? Does he just mouth off? Does he throw his drink in Sam's face? Does he take a swing at Sam?
This is where we are at now.

If Iran does something foolish like shooting down another drone then I think a Reagan-Libya response is warranted but nothing more than that.
If they are feeling especially chipper and decide to take shots at one of our military vessels then we light them up like we did Iraq, but we do not set a single boot into the country (except to maybe blow up their nuclear sites).
frick this prolonged siege bullshite, especially when we have the technology and firepower to obliterate their infrastructure to the point of setting them back decades without unnecessary risks to the lives of our military personnel.

Does not look on the surface. What does it take for a super to retaliate? Iran almost a sank a tanker in international waters and shot down a US drone.
