This is such a gay "talking point"

We don't have either. We have rule by money.

Saw this off Rob Schneider’s retweet.
Eerily familiar to exactly what’s happening right now.

A democracy doesn't have any documents protecting the public from the majority.

Indeed, there are dozens of kinds of democracy … including pure or direct democracy and representative democracy (also called a republic).

What makes our system special is not even discussed in this pedantic little pissing match … its FEDERAL nature, and particularly the very specific FORM of its federal nature, as crafted in our unique Constitution.

You can have a representative democracy that does not REMOTELY protect minority rights from the tyranny of the majority. Even in a federal system, you can definitely have a Constitution that does not have an Electoral College. The list goes on and on. Our unique Constitution addresses those issues and more.

If we want to be truly descriptive, the USA is a representative democracy in the form of a federal constitutional republic.

true.

We're a relative democracy but still not a democracy.

Its a Republic. Those wanting to protect our democracy are simply people who can't define the word.

"Democracy" is a term that means more than "Direct democracy" (or mob rule)

True vs relative.

It means you can call it democratic, but its not a democracy.

Where people vote for lawmakers, not laws. Democracy literally means rule by the people.

quote:

Democracy is Relative
In other words, certain things need to be beyond the reach of the majority, precisely because they embody values that a society needs to survive, and that nobody has the right to ignore or shun. No majority can make what is wrong into something that is right.

We have protections from mob rule and democracy.

Those are not decided by popular vote, they are in our constitution

Pretty much everything is being redefined in the culture war.

But to say "protect our democracy" is silly and shows ignorance. I prefer to deal with smarter folk.

Seems to me, it's become all but a wholly meaningless term at this point.

I mean, they are sort of the original poster children for the meaninglessness of it. We've only more recently gotten onboard.

"People's democratic dictatorship" is one of those relative democratic things.

So is "Democratic People’s Republic"

They'll tell you they have a democracy.

I think most of the problems with the word are due to the success of neoliberalism and free trade leading to a massive increase in democracy worldwide. You're going to get many different flavors as a result, but in 100 years it went form a small minority of the world to basically everywhere in the world.

A few World Wars and decolonialization helped, too.
