NBC and SNL dropped the ball big time with their 50th anniversary special.

IMO, it’s always been heavily dependent on team chemistry. Original cast had it. There were flashes of it in the 80’s, then a solid span in the late Bush and early Clinton years. Norm, Kevin, Dennis, Phil, etc.
After that, it’s been pretty much just smarmy hipster trash.
