Virginia Dem who joined GOP to reject gun control bill says 2nd Amendment activists made a difference
OK on the surface a Dem voting with the Reps is a good thing but read the fine print on WHY he voted the way he did:
quote:
"I had two problems with the weapons ban bill we voted on yesterday," he said
quote:
the first problem was that the categories of weapons and component parts that were impacted were too broad.
Secondly, he said that the retroactive portion of the bill was unfair.
"In other words, if you went out and legally purchased a weapon or legally purchased a particular part, just simply by owning that you could become a class VI felon or class I misdemeanant. And that, to me, it's not fair, it's not due process, and that was what really bothered me the most," he told Hegseth.
So if they "clean" this up he would probably vote with the Dems even if the changes didn't really change the overall meaning or enforcement requirements.
quote:
Democratic Sen. L. Louise Lucas audibly referred to the defectors as a "bump of wimps" from the dais
A bump of wimps?
quote:
However, Petersen said that listening to his constituents and pro-Second Amendment activists were very "helpful" and mattered to his decision-making process.
"I probably would have voted the same way anyhow, but it was important to hear from people," he concluded
Never shut up guys, NEVER SHUT UP!!!! Remember starting a conversation works

I'll be interested to see what comes back from the committee they referred the bill back to. Even if they come back with the obvious, logical, and evidence-based conclusion that such bills have zero positive impact on criminal usage of firearms the usual suspects will continue to parrot the bullshite talking points that these laws are about "saving lives".

Virginia is democracy by tyranny.

Would ex post facto apply & render this unconstitutional?

Check out the Lautenberg Amendment signed in the late 90s when it went back in time and made every person found guilty of misdemeanor DV unable to own a gun. The law specifically says if "you've ever been found guilty" which is definitely ex post facto.

His reasoning for not voting with the Dems is the exact reason we would want someone to not vote with the Dems.

No it isn't; had he said the bills were unconstitutional then it would be.

Lucas is part of the problem. Been a rep since 1992.

What about blocking criminal immigrants? That saves lives. But they are ok with them coming over.
