Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said Griddy Energy will forgive the more than $29 million customers owe in unpaid bills.
Paxton, who sued the energy company this month, said he wanted to "hold them accountable" in last month's historic winter storm, which left millions of Texans without power in subfreezing temperatures.
As people struggled to survive, Griddy debited "enormous amounts from customer accounts," Paxton said in a statement Tuesday. He had sued the company under the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act, but he dropped the suit in exchange for the company's working in "good faith" to resolve the unpaid bills.
"I ensured that Griddy's proposed bankruptcy plan takes an important step forward by offering releases to approximately 24,000 former customers who owe $29.1 million in unpaid electric bills," Paxton said. "Griddy and my office are engaged in ongoing good faith negotiations to attempt to address additional relief for those Griddy customers who have already paid their storm-related energy bills."

Shouldn't the people who have already paid been the first to get relief?

Mine was only about 20% higher than it usually is.
Never thought I’d say this but.... Entergy

Well, those that didn't pay obviously become first to get relief, but those that did should get an immediate refund based on this news.

Ercot has cheap arse power, and if you weren't greedy you would have had a zero percent increase during this event.
I really don't feel for people who float their power with how cheap it is.

It was below freezing for more than a week so the heater ran a little longer than usual. Stfu, bitch

That's not what the issue is, the bills aren't higher because of more usage, the bills are higher because of the per kwh rate people subjected themselves to.

What I don't understand is TD posters in the area said Griddy told their customers to switch plans before the storm.
All these articles make them out to be bad guys but the whole point of being on their plan was you paid cheaper rates but risked high prices at times. That event happens and they are the shitheads?
Am I missing something?

Personal responsibility is a bad thing and there is a growing number of people in our population that are too stupid to look after themselves and need the government tit to survive...

Got mine today …. $102.00 for a 3600 sft home. I am lost as to how this happened to people here.

I'm not familiar with the contract details but it sounds like some people entered into an ARM type energy bill where the cost per kWh fluctuates. Seems like a really bad idea. Then they got the price gouging end of the stick to make it worse.
The outrageous electric bills seemed to be outliers and I don't know how many received the exponentially higher bills. Mine was pretty much on par based on the prior year. Although my energy was out the whole time the freeze was occurring so I didn't consume the "expensive" energy.
