For the 2007-2008 school year, annual tuition for LSU's Lab School for all grades was $3,652. Tuition at St. Joseph’s Academy was $7,931; at Parkview Baptist, $5,440 to $5,865; and at Episcopal High School, $9,850 to $12,900.

I wouldn't send my child to an EBR parish public school, but I would send my child to an Ascension parish public school.

Here's my question ... while I believe that the BR private schools mentioned above offer a great education, do you think the price is justified? Not to many employers care where you went to grade school. Also, many kids can "catch up" so to speak as well later on in life (college).

If you got it, spend it. I'm a product of BR public education. Learn from me.

While a great teacher can make a big difference, I also think you get out of school what you put in to it.

no, but the amount you actually learn is important, in regards to college and life. i grew up in shreveport (south highlands, caddo middle magnet, caddo magnet high) and those were great schools. i still use knowledge that i pulled from them, although i didn't realize it then.

do parents who send their kids to private schools (generally) become more involved in their kids school life because they have a vested (financial) interest?

looking at both (private & public), who usually grows bigger high school football crowds, how usually has higher dance attendences? how usually operates betetr fundraisers?

I think catching up in college is very hard to do, if not impossible in many curriculums.

Nah, I doubt that.

well i went to both, and i can tell you in my experiences, it wasn't even close

the parents were MUCH more involved in the private sector...i can also tell you from my experiences with other schools I went to, in observation it appeared to be true as well

even if it isn't necessarily true, sometimes parent spending that kind of cash on their kids education makes them feel like they are doing more

Go and visit the above mentioned private schools and see for yourself. These schools will sell themselves.

I went to Lee High, Graduated in 93. Much different place now from what I hear. Not that Im racist, but I'd like my son to be around kids who are like him. A BR public elementary school he'd be like a grain of rice amongst some cocco beans. Not to mention the discipline is different in private school. I paid 4500.00 for his Kindergarden but he's moving to Ascension Public for 1st since his mom is moving out there.

I always hear that Ascension has a great public school system, but I was just wondering how they rate that. I knew at least a dozen people that went to public high school in Ascension and they all had close to 4.0's but when they got to college it didn't work out too well. I can count 5 that dropped out and the others just had to work really hard to make ok grades. I just don't know what they use to validate the public school system.

They sell themselves b/c your child gets to be around other kids from the same social class.

Desegregation segregated my high school the year after I left

I assume. I guess they just do a good job of preparing them for the standardized tests.

My point is that they did very well in high school but terrible in college. I know people that went to private school that dropped out of college too, but it wasn't a surprise. I guess you can expect that though in bigger schools. I was just wondering if it true that the schools in Ascension were really that good.
