Hostage Situation at Projects in Houma

A man with a gun took a woman and her son hostage today inside an apartment at the Senator Circle public housing complex in Houma, police said.


About 11:45 a.m., police were seen carrying a young boy who appeared to be unharmed away from the apartment.

Houma Police officers responded to a 911 call about 10:22 a.m., Chief Todd Duplantis said at the scene.

"When they arrived, they discovered than an unknown suspect had barricaded himself in a woman's house with her child and had taken them hostage with a gun," Duplantis said around noon. "Hostage negotiators and the SWAT team are at the scene. We do not know names of the victims or suspect at this time."

Houma-Terrebonne Housing Authority Executive Director Wayne Thibodeaux said police have told him the suspect does not live in the apartment but has a relationship with the woman who does. Thibodeaux said the woman is 22 years old; her son is 1.
