After doing some reading, I dropped a whole $16 at Target a few weeks ago and $20.50 for 4 lbs of green beans online. Time to roast my own coffee for morning espresso.

The Setup:
Just a $16 hot air popcorn popper from Target. Do some reading, as only certain models are recommended. This being one of them. The bowl of water is to catch the chaff as it flys out.

The Beans:

Green Beans In:

7 Minute roast for this batch.

Roasting: 1/2/3

To cool I scatter them on a half sheet baking sheet and toss them every few minutes. They cool down in maybe 5-6 minutes.

Roasted vs Green Beans:

I'm officially ruined. I don't think I can buy pre-roasted coffee anymore. It's the richest cups I've ever had. At this level of freshness, you really taste all the flavor notes in each blend. I found that freshness is certainly king. Even week old Whole Foods coffee is stale to me. I think you could get away with using it in the french press, but the espresso maker squeezes all the funkiness out into the cup.

The crema is beautiful.

Nice work

It is ;) Ground beans go stale after about 15 minutes and whole beans in about a week. Seems more cost-efficient to do it your way, too.

I constantly was having to make a trip into BR (from P-ville) to get fresh coffee for the weekends. Sometimes I'd settle and get a bag of River Road, but that would go stale before I was half way done. This way, I can buy cheaper green beans and just roast on demand. I have same-day roasted coffee every day now for cheaper and minimal effort. I even bought a bag of their decaf beans. That way, if I want an evening drink, I can have super fresh coffee. I'd never buy decaf because I would use it so rarely. Easy to keep a bag of greens around.

Not enough for a full sized pot of coffee. At least in one batch that is. You can fit about a half cup of greens into it, and that yields nearly a cup of roasted beans.

ETA:
I've not tried more than a half cup green as that is the recommendations I read. You could probably get away with 3/4 of a cup. It doesn't have any problem spinning them or getting a nice even roast at this quantity.

The half cup works perfectly for me and my wife to each have a double shot.
