We just planted a shite ton of Sunn Hemp. I hope the deer eat the crap out of it.

Supposed to be like 30% protein and grow 6ft in 60 days.
Yyy
Also planted corn, iron peas, and chufa...

Edit: LINK added

A lot of rain.... only field they haven't mowed down
The peas are stout, you can see the hemp poking through

Never heard of it, but sounds interesting. Where did you plant? and how is the price compared to other stuff?

No hogs, but there is a very healthy population of turkeys that I am worried about.

In our Eufala place. Some of the things I'm reading make it sound pretty exciting. I'd love to cut some strips in it in the fall and plant a fall blend between them.

I just read up on it. Sounds like it is ideal for summer plots for deer. Replenishes the soil too, so it should help your fall/winter plots as well.

I'll have to mention that to the guy I hunt with in Shreveport.

good article on it here

If the deer don't eat the hemp you could sell it to hippies to make clothing.

great article slick.

I wonder if it would shade out other plants growing below it. I am also tempted to place it along the lake side of our dam for duck shooting cover.

I was wondering that too. It said it is good to plant with peas, and that the deer will bed down in the hemp and eat the peas. That doesn't sound right to me, but I doubt the article would outright lie.

peas are climbers though. I may just use it as strips in the large 7 acre plot we have. Hell with that much protien I may be able to convince the property owner to restrict cattle from the area during season as long as I allow them to graze it down after season.

I wonder if the peas climb the hemp. I'll post growth updates.

I know nothing about the hemp but I watched some does walk over peanuts to graze on some sugar graze sorghum. it really surprised me cause the protein is better in the peanuts but I guess taste is what rules.

They ain't found it yet or only cajun deers eat it.

All I know is that the ones around my house fall over dem selves to cut it. Did it make pods yet?

Yeah its made pods but to be honest it is to close to some houses for them to get to it. Been kinda busy lately to post or read but do you have peas and other stuff planted that they like the okra more.

Oh they will mow down the cow peas.i just about gave up planting that. If I could talk my brother into letting me use his electric fence around the plot then I would plant it.

I planted Austrian Winter Peas and they ate it but not as fast as cowpeas but thats for the winter.

The first year I planted, before I "educated" them I mixed Lab Lab and Cowpeas. Once the found it it was unbelievable. I'd have 7-10 in the field ay the time.

I just dont see them hitting the oats/rye too much but it is pretty to look at, especially when they walk thru it to get to the 100 lbs of corn on the ground

New Pic in OP. Stuff is 5ft high in some fields. They have mowed it down in the back of the property.

The high fields have beds in the middle of them and they are eating it off the base of the plants.

I'm pretty sure we'll leave some strips and plant the fall mix around it.

Bushoggin and discin this hemp should result in a lot of green manure for the fall bed.
