The Speed Option. With an unbalanced line. To the short-side of the field.

The only thing missing on this play was JJ keeping it.

LSU & The Speed Option

GET SOME BAMA!!!!!!!!!!!!

Check your boy out on the 22 yard line (the blue line is denoting the LOS here). He is busy mauling TWO Alabama defenders on his own.

BEASTMODE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hilliard and Faulk did their assignments and JJ actually ran the short side option to perfection.

This is the kind of information we should be getting from the reporters not "Coach how did you feel when your team scored the last field goal?
Thanks for the link!!

Outstanding work. BTW, for those who haven't had the experience of breaking down game film with the coaches, this is exactly how it's done. Nice job.

I felt the same way that you did for years. I especially got frustrated with the advent of the Spread Formations & their prevalence at the college level. I didn't get how commenators kept calling West Virginia & Leach's Texas Tech bunch "Spread Offenses" when they clearly didn't do anything close to the same in terms of running & passing.

I started searching around and found Smart Football. He was the editor of the NYT Football Blog for awhile, but he's always had this site. Now he's writing for Grantland.

If you poke around his site & Brophy Football, you'll find some old Pete Jenkins DL Teaching Tapes that show in-game technique & then practice drills. Manna from heaven those are.

You'll also see him break down Chavis' edge blitz schemes from earlier this year before the UWV game.

Great asset if you're like me and relatively ignorant about football and wanna learn more about the scheme and the actual plays on a more granular level.

If Hilliard doesn't make that block and Ford gets tackled around the 27 we could be talking today about how Miles is an idiot for running a play that lost yards and caused LSU to have to attempt a longer field goal.
Instead, it was blocked perfectly and set LSU up for a gimme field goal.

YEP! While Faulk's block(s) was key it was Hilliard's block that prvented a TFL.

My question is, did they show conclusive evidence that he stepped out of bounds? I really wanted that TD, as I had expounded my last bit of energy celebrating it.

Not that it matters, but I was curious if CBS showed the replay which proved the right call was made.

Also, great link.

Agree - announcers and analysts can do a much better job of this.

On another note -- how many LSU fans have acknowledged that the "winning play" was a short side option?

IMO he was out of bounds and it looked pretty obvious to me. I watched when I got home Sunday.
