I saw in the advocate this morning that we could potentially sweep State and still not make the SEC tourney. Can someone explain to me how this could happen (and the tiebreakers used that leave us out)?

quote:

LSU could sweep the series and not get to Hoover, Ala., for the league tournament.

quote:

The Tigers’ task is much more daunting: They must sweep the Bulldogs in their home ballpark to maintain a shot at qualifying for the SEC tournament, and they need help from Arkansas, Ole Miss, South Carolina or Tennessee.

Ole Miss wins 2/3, Alabama and Auburn each win at least once. We would lose out on those tiebreakers.

LSU isn't going to sweep, so don't worry about it.

But how would Ole Miss go over us?

Head to head record among all the teams tied.

Actually I remember we were talking about this in another thread the other day. And you were correct in the way you had the tiebreaker done originally and I was wrong.

I assume it would happen if Ole Miss wins 2/3 and LSU/Arky/OleMiss end in a 3-way tie...I guess Arky and Ole Miss get the nod because Ole Miss would be 3-3 vs the others, LSU would be 2-4 against the others, Arky would be 4-2 against the others.

And I don't even want to think about it being more than a 3-way tie because that hurts my brain.

All that said, the simplest and most realistic way for us to make it is for us to sweep+Arky winning series vs Ole Miss. The tie-breakers are moot as far as advancing to Hoover as we'd end up with a better league record than Ole Miss and State.

Really? That's odd. I figured it was wrong because usually even with a multiple team tie breaker, you break it once (or however many times it takes to get down to 2 teams) then use the two team one. But yea if what you said is true then yes, LSU would stay home

I think this is correct. No way LSU misses the SEC tourney if they sweep. They are a lock.

Man I do not trust Arkansas against Ole Miss.

It seems to me the only thing in that series that we DO NOT want is Ole Miss winning 2/3. Any other scenario (Arky winning series OR Ole Miss sweeps series would be fine for us)

If Arky wins series (2/3 or sweep), we pass Ole Miss...no tie

If Ole Miss sweeps series, we pass Arky...no tie

Now if Ole Miss wins 2/3, that's where it gets sticky.

Three-Team Tie (or more): When three or more teams are tied for a finish, the following procedure will be used (in descending order until the tie is broken): Once the tie has been reduced to two teams, the two-team tiebreaker procedure as stated in No. 1 above will be used.
A. If all three teams are common opponents: Total won-lost percentage of games played among the tied teams.
B. Won-lost percentage of the tied teams versus the No. 1 seed and proceeding through the No. 8 seed, if necessary, using common opponents only.
C. If three or more teams still are tied, the Commissioner will conduct a draw.

If LSU sweeps, Bama & Auburn win 1, & Ole Miss wins 2, then there's a 5 team tie for 4 spots.

LSU would finish last based on the tiebreaker.

Won-lost record for games played among the 5 tied teams would be as follows:

Auburn 8-4
Bama 7-5
Arkansas 6-6
Ole Miss 5-7
LSU 4-8

Edit: Confirmed by SEC office that LSU would be left out of SEC tourney in 4 or 5 team tie.

Can you take Auburn out of that and re-figure the records? I think Auburn gets at least two wins and isn't involved in the tie-breaker

I do think the following is fairly realistic:

LSU sweeps
Bama wins 1/3 vs USC
Ole Miss wins 2/3 vs Arky

so you'd have Bama/LSU/Arky/Ole Miss in a 4-way tie with only 3 teams going to hoover

LSU loses out again in 4 team tie among Bama, LSU, Arkansas, & Ole Miss:

Bama 6-3
Arkansas 5-4
Ole Miss 4-5
LSU 3-6

So, assuming that Auburn wins the series vs Tennessee and an LSU sweep over State, we need ONE of the following to advance to Hooover:

Either:

-anything except Ole Miss winning 2/3 vs Arky

OR

-USC sweep of Alabama

Why do you waste brain cells trying to figure out things that in all reality will never happen?

I'm missing why people still think we stay home in those scenarios if we sweep MSU. In all of those scenarios with multiple teams tied at 14-16, LSU and Ole Miss always wind up being the last 2 teams in the tiebreaker.

Thus, it then goes to a 2-team tiebreaker as stated above.

That would mean LSU beats out Ole Miss.

LSU cannot be left out of SECT if it sweeps MSU.
