Part of putting together my final mock and Saints hit list I come up with a few out of the blue surprise type possibilities. No 4th to 6th Rd so kinda limiting this year. Payton/Loomis 7th Rd picks can be absolutely unpredictable. I did put Christian Yount a long snapper from UCLA there this year.

So coming up with 3rd Rd surprises can be a lot harder. That is, coming up with a name that really hasn't registered on the radar yet. I finally found one that looked like a pretty cool fit. Then today he shows up on rotoworld. Since he won't be much of a surprise now, I'll give him as an early offering...

the blurb today-
NFL Network's Mike Mayock does not believe that Abilene Christian WR Edmond Gates will make it out of the draft's second day.
Mayock likens the small-schooler to Mike Wallace for his ability to "take the top off a zone." Adds Mayock, "Somebody’s going to jump on him either late in the second round or early in the third. ... His floor is the third round." Gates goes 6-foot, 192 pounds and ran 4.37 at the Combine, although Mayock pegs him with 4.31 wheels. Gates also has an 11-foot, 2-inch broad jump. Apr 18, 3:13 PM

He's a burner, not only fast but quick too. He could replace Roby AND Devery (even if not immediately). Another ex roundball player that took on football into college.

a lotta video part 1
a lotta video part 2

Scouting report-
Gates is a player who absolutely jumps out at you on tape. With 4.3 time in the 40 yard dash, as well as a 40 inch vertical jump, Gates was far more athletic than most of his competition, and he used that athleticism to consistently make big plays. He has the straight line speed to get behind NFL DBs, and the ability to out jump them as well. Because he has such little experience playing football, he will need to have solid coaching to learn how to harness that athletic ability to be successful at the next level.

The lack of experience is likely what will concern teams most about Gates. Without question he has the athletic ability necessary for the NFL. What he will have to show that he can learn to run NFL quality routes, as opposed to what he did at ACU, which was mostly just running to a spot or just outrunning a CB. However, he is farther along than ACU alum Johnny Knox was when Knox entered the draft in 2009, and Knox has adjusted very well in the NFL. If Gates works at it, it’s likely that he could be an even better pro than Knox.

c'mon, this guy deserves some discussion at least

draft blog-
The teams want you to tell about yourself and how you got to where you are now. They ask about family, criminal records, and after you tell them that they want to get into football and see how much you know. They want to see how much you remember from the season. The main thing was background and asking a lot of stuff about football. I can’t remember all the teams I met with but I met with the Jets, Lions, Rams, 49ers, Packers, Giants, Bucs, Saints, Panthers, Falcons, and Seahawks were among them.

Unless we get rid of Devery, I don't see taking a WR that high.

it's about value, immediately could replace Roby, Devery now or later

CB P-Rob 1st Rd
OT Brown 2nd Rd
WR Meachem 1st Rd
weren't on the radar either

Colston last year of contract
Meachem last year of contract
Moore likely UFA
Devery affordable for 2 more yrs but not if production goes backwards like last year

This has been discussed here a good bit and I dont think anyone would be shocked if it happened.

Veryyyy interesting Blues. I've been pretty confident they're taking a DL and RB in the third, I could see getting a DL in the 2nd instead of an OT like I want and picking up this WR and a RB.

I like the sound of this guy. He needs coaching but if any team can coach, it's the Saints. He's got lots of upside and just needs time to develop.. and we already have a solid WR corps for him to learn behind. I don't like the idea of cutting Devery (he's my hometown hero. Representing Opelousas!) but this guy sounds like a good replacement.

just with the draft history since Payton/Loomis I think ya gotta exercise some thought on some out of the box picks.

look at the videos, sure division 2 but his speed and quickness jumps off the screen as much as anyone as I've seen in sometime.

Yeah definitely. They usually go BPA and in the 3rd round this guy has good value imo. Would you take him with the 1st 3rd round pick or the 2nd? I guess it depends on who is available in the 3rd round.. If Kendall Hunter or some great 3rd round value RB is available I'd rather get that first and take the risk of this guy not being on the board for the 2nd pick.

looks pretty developmental for early 3rd to me. But as saying with P/L, who knows? they certainly aren't afraid to jump on who they want no matter what the popular opinion is. sometimes guys like this where it is hard to find much opinion! the point of discussion though- who beyond the obvious DE, DT, LB, RB, picks could surprise us?

I honestly don't know, I don't keep up with the draft a whole lot. But I wanted to add about this guy:

Jimmy Graham was a huge developmental player and they took him in the 3rd round and he's probably our starter next season (if we have one). I wouldn't put it past them.

I'd almost say pickup a TE before WR cause we can probably get a better WR through UDFA than we could TE.

the saints HAVE been looking at another one very similar to Graham...

NOLA Jordan Cameron Story

Cameron has all the tools necessary to be a starter at the next level, however, he has almost no meaningful experience. He’s developmental prospect who could prove to be one of the best mid-round picks in this draft, however, developing him will be a process.

don't know much about this guy but i definitely will want someone with blocking abilities. Someone with the dual threat ala shockey. Our run game is vital to our success on offense.
