Anybody ever been on a Jubilee, or even know what it is?

This happens on the east side of Mobile Bay which is exactly where I am from. I've been on several and one good trip, I gigged a shite ton of flounder. (no pics cause I'm dumb) Another time I went, I was literally walking in a mass spaghetti of eels, it so fricking gross to walk knee deep in that shite. The weather conditions, the tides, the wind, the temp all has to align perfectly for this to happen.

quote:

Jubilee is the name used locally for a natural phenomenon that occurs sporadically on the shores of Mobile Bay, a large body of water on Alabama's Gulf Coast. During a jubilee many species of crab and shrimp, as well as flounder, eels, and other demersal fish will leave deeper waters and swarm—in large numbers and very high density—in a specific, shallower coastal area of the bay.[1] A jubilee is a celebrated event in Mobile Bay, and it attracts large crowds, many drawn by the promise of abundant and easy-to-catch seafood.[2] Although similar events have been reported in other bodies of water, Mobile Bay is the only place where the regular appearance of this phenomenon has been documented.[3]

Here's a few pics of what happens. This shite is absolute mayhem.

Old school

You can literally pick and choose what you want to snag.

My wife and her family are from Mobile and had a bay house. I have heard for years about the "Jubilee." They said that it last a very short time you just walk along the water with a net picking and choosing what to fill the ice chest with.

Yep. That is exactly what it is. It is quite an experience.

Never been on one but have heard about them for years. Guy that sits next to me lived in Daphne growing up. He's been on a few.

They are almost always in the summer and if I remember right they need an east wind for a day or so.

A slight wind out of the east is ideal and if it rained in the early afternoon the day before, you might have one. Old guys get in their trucks starting around 3-4 in the morning when "they" think there will be a jubilee and just go check small beaches and boat launches. Once they see one rolling in, they either get what they want and GTFO or they call people and when that happens, it turns into a complete and utter shite show. So many people call others, text, ect and it becomes a little circus like. I've been successful in "calling" that there will be a jubilee the next morning.

I've seen pics of crawfish doing that. May have been from Sabine river. Can't recall.

These pictures were taken on Hwy 12 between Starks and Deweyville on the sides of the road. The water was high and after the dam gates at Toledo were closed the water started going down and this is what it looks like. People are on the sides of the highway using a dip net loading up everything they can get their hands on.

I love crawfish, but that might have freaked me out a little.

That many in one place, looks too much like spiders and I HATE spiders.

My family is all from the Mobile Bay area, been too many Jubilees. Best one was when we were camping near Ft Morgan on the bay side at my Great Grandmothers house, we were dumping drinks out of coolers to fill up with flounder.

Sounds like a fricking blast. The best one I went on, my boss called me right before I was going in to work and we got a bunch of flounder all while I was on the clock.

I was on two on Perdido Key sometime back in 02-03. One was mild. Had a lot more fish and crabs, etc, than usual, but I call it mild compared the one we experienced next. It was crazy how many animals there were. Literally stepping on flounder in the middle of the day. An old timer from around there told us what it was called, but didn't seem too phased by it. Awesome experience though.

I'd love to be on crawfish like that. My goodness

I always wanted to go to one of those, but you have to know somebody to get in on it.

That's the way it is. It's tough to get on a call list cause the old coggers don't want everybody and their mother there.

This also happens in Grand Isle, LA occassionally. Not sure when or why, something to do with the oxygen content of the water.

I've heard of this. I can only imagine how crazy/awesome/surreal that one would be. Plus, I LOVE seafood (and cooking) so I would be happy for quite a while.

When does this (sometimes) occur? I think I recall reading about it happens around early summer?

It happens here (in Mobile Bay eastern shore side) during the middle of the summer.

This happens due to low oxygen levels in the bay, which is typically in the summer. The right wind conditions will drive oxygen deprived water against the shore, driving the wildlife there as well as they have no where to go.
