Yes I am referring to blackpowder old style with no percussion cap a flint that strikes powder in a bowl outside the gun which in turn ignites the charge in the gun firing it. Very much like revolutionary style guns.

I would never say I could do it again but I have practiced out to 200 yds with it. (I shoot it a lot). However when a 174" 9 point steps out you are going to shoot at it if it's a reasonable distance.

I have a sweet Winchester 30-30 that I took from my dad. It ejects out the top so it doesn't have a scope. I haven't killed anything with it yet, but plan on popping a doe with it this year.

I've killed several deer with a shotgun/buckshot. My longest kill was probably my first deer. It was a doe about 40 yards away on top of a ridge that was probably 50 ft. high. I was sitting at the bottom of it and she came rolling right at me.

doe at 130 yards with a 12 ga sabot slug, (50 cal, 450 grain hollow point) on the run. Hit her in the back of the head. I just threw up and shot...lucky shot, but I got her.

Like never shot a rifle without a scope at an animal, or never period?

If never period you should try it sometime, it's a lot of fund and a good challenge compared to using a scope. Granted shooting over 75 yds there is no comparison, a scope is much better.

i've scoped my rifles. I may have fired a muzzle loader one time but really wasn't aiming at anything.

I have a .30-30 that doesn't have a scope on it.

Never shot a deer with it though.

I have a customer that grew up in San Diego. He used to shoot long distance competition. He use .308 and .30-06. He said he would shoot 400-500 open sites.

My ruger 10/22 has killed more coons, nutria, snakes etc. than i can remember. Deadly accurate little gun with open sights.

Get a military rifle that has range adjustable sights and I am sure it is possible. I wouldn't mind taking some long shots with my M1 garand but I am no where near practiced enough to trust my shooting ability on a deer.

He was using military rifles.

He said that there were retired snipers that could hit a 18 inch plate at 600-700 yds open sites.

He said that was what he wanted to be when he grew up.

You definitely wouldn't want to be down range of those guys.

Hell, I can't even see an 18 inch plate that far and I paid a lot of money for my eyesite.

Crow at about 60-65 yards with a .22 short single action pistol, luckiest shot I've ever made. (know it's not a rifle but I felt like putting it anyway )

Shot a deer at about 150 yards with a .30-06 years ago. Used to never use a scope. Still only have a scope on one of my rifles and prefer to target practice without.
