:inbefore410:
I have several SD options 38+P, 380, 9mm, and .40. What are is preferred ammunition for each for concealed carry self defense. What about for home self defense in the .40 or 9mm?
I currently have UMC 180 grain JHP for the .40 but I was shooting the other day and the bullets were passing through a 6" post and impacting the backstop still jacketed.
I have magtech JHP for the .38 but haven't shot them enough to gauge effectiveness. I did pop a hog with one in the head and it dropped but that really doesen't tell me much.

Sounds like they're working as designed to me.

I like Hornady Critical Defense for my .38 special, .380, and 9mm.
In my .45 I shoot Blazer... cheap and I've never had a failure to fire.

I have Hornady Critical Defense in my wife's .380 and some cheap hollow tips in my .40. I figure with 14 rounds and good shot placement that the cheap ammo will do fine.
I'll eventually upgrade the ammo in my .40, but I want to have enough time and money to thoroughly test a bunch of different rounds.

No, they the jacket should at least be peeled back to allow the HP lead to expand. Im not looking for a through and through shot for self defense.

Shoot it into water instead of wood. They're not designed to expand when striking solid objects.

I will give it a try with some wet newspaper filled jugs. I really dont think Im going to get what Im looking for though considering the bullets look untouched with the exception of not being in a case now.

as stated by several other posters, Hornady Critical Defense or XTP is pretty good, Corbon, Federal HSP, Speer Gold Dot, Rem Golden Sabre, Win PDX1, cant go wrong with any of them. Stick with these as they are the newer generation Hollow Points and have a much better chance of expansion than the older generation HP´s.
However, for my home defense weapon, 45 ACP, I load up 6 Glaser Safety Slugs first as they have less penetration on inside walls and less danger to innocents from excess penetration. Something to think about.

well I thik I will be collecting milk jugs and buying some hornady critical defense rounds along with a few others. I will try to video and post what I get.
I will need a bunch of jugs though, 3-4 per round with 4 calibers to test and 2-3 brands of ammo.
wow about 48 jugs.

Don't know about the .38, but you may want to watch this video. Didn't perform well in the .40.
