Yamaha Outboard - Choke Question

I have a 2013 Yamaha F60LA - sometimes won't turnover. When I turn the key, I'll get a single click of the solenoid, but no turnover. Either I can wait a few minutes and the engine starts right up as if nothing's wrong...or, I can disengage the throttle from the gear selection, move it forward, and get it started. But until recently, I've never had to disengage the throttle to choke it. Usually started up first turn of the key. Battery isn't the issue, I typically keep it on a maintenance charge until I take it out. Ideas? What to look out for?

It lets you start it in gear? Unless I'm reading that wrong. That shouldn't be possible that I know of.

Negative. On my binnacle control, I can press in on the side of the throttle and it disengages it from moving it in and out of gear. Sort of like pushing a clutch in and revving the engine.

F60 should be fuel injected (ie: no choke)

does giving it gas help turnover? Every now and then mine "floods" and won't turnover/start unless I start her with the gas engaged a bit.

If by giving it gas, you mean taking it out of gear and pushing the throttle forward, yeah. I’m just confused as to why it sometimes won’t turnover at all unless I do that...if it has fuel, and a spark, and the kill switch is disengaged...???

Think you have a bad sensor in your control box. Doesnt know when you're in neutral

I was thinking this also. If you say you have to mess with the throttle then it is probably the switch that prevents you from starting in gear.

He is saying he revs the engine up to get it to start over. Similar to hitting the gas in your truck when your battery is dead and you try and start.

How do you do that? Take the cover off and get someone to hold the throttle? How would it not be in gear otherwise?

There’s probably 2 switches, one in the throttle and one on the engine. Use a multi meter to test them or just replace them Google and YouTube are your friends).

What’s your exact engine model and year? I think I have all Yamaha Outboard manual from 2012 and older.

Thanks for all the responses, Gents. EveryoneGetsATrophy might be on to something...I have noticed that sometimes even though I feel the click to neutral coming out of gear, I might have to move the throttle around to try to get it to "seat" back into neutral before it will turnover again.

And I knew there was a term for what I'm calling "taking it our of gear" - Yamaha calls it "neutral warm up". I've also seen this description on Ebay:

The fast idle button can be used to advance throttle without shifting into gear. With control lever in Neutral, push on the fast idle button(cover) to open throttle for starting and warm-up.

Never doubt the power of clear communication.
