Google xpress boat problems. Quite a few welds cracking. FWIW you can get a 24 foot aluminum boat built for 12-13,000

as long as you don't plan on taking it out of the marsh..first trip to the islands you will want to sell it.

also yes lots of welds breaking on them.

Like I said this seems like the right approach for you.....for me, I get what I want the first time and I'm good to go. I don't have the biggest bass boat but I have the one I want; got it in '12 new. I have no ambition to trade up or get a new one.....unless of course this one sinks then all bets are off.
I see what your saying. Personally I went from a wife in medschool in '09 to a wife who's a physician in '17. It was hard not to upgrade my boat and I'm very satisfied with the ROI my xpress provided.

The main issue is the public sees "Bay" boat with a better price tag than fiberglss and think they can head south. Its a BASS boat hull made with .125" alum. It has a slight V and a narrow beam, low sides and even lower transom, no trim tabs (could be added but never seen one with them)----everything a real bay boat has this doesn't.
Its a bass boat with a CC. Its a good boat for freshwater and pond hopping in the marsh so if thats what you do it will be great. enjoy it.

If you fish the coast come out there and see how many there are. next to none. Rod lockers and stern storage is a joke. No place for more than 1 ice chest. 30gal tank won't cut it for a 2 day trip.

ETa: my FIL is on his second xpress 18' bass and only fishes leeville for reds. It works great for him. I had an H20B and fishing the coast was tough. took a few waves over the bow while around last island. The transom had less than 8" freeboard with a 115hp on a 10" jack plate

I have the 22 with a 175 and it works fine. The only time I have an issue is in a cross chop in 2+ seas. There is a HUGE difference in the ride between the 20 and 22. The 22 also allows for 2 ice chests if needed up front. The 32 gallon tank will take you further than you probably want to go in a day. I average 5-5.5 mpg a trip. Like the others said though, if you plan on going offshore a lot look for a glass boat. If it's only a couple times and you mainly fish marsh go for it. Easy clean up, shallow draft, plenty fast.

I do miss the easy clean up

I heard the 22 rides a lot bettwr but 2+ seas would beat that xpress down. You not "running" in 2' close chop in any xpress. Not trying to get into a wave argument though.

True, 30 gallons would get me a good ways but was cutting it close over 2 days vs having that extra 20-40 gallons a glass boat would have.

You are correct, 2+ is a no go for me unless it kicks up. It can handle it going with or straight against the waves if you trim down and let the bow take it. The cross chop is where you get beat to hell and back. Whodat rode with in one night from the pickets in some heavy seas, he knows the difference in the 20 and 22. Again, it's not a glass boat and will not do nearly as well in a heavy chop but it works for me

I feel you haha the xpress beam and lack of chines is why it's so wet and unstable. The bottom is about 6' wide but because if the taper of the sides but claim a 7' something beam.

Yep and I was very surprised how how much better it rode and handled. But the 20' to 22' price difference is about 8-10k when adding extras and the bigger motor.

Seapickle and I both had the 20' and sold them for frontier 2104.

ETA: yes they warranty them and I'm not sure how long. Expect your boat to be gone for 6-8 months though. I heard it's a shite show dealing with their customer service

if you're asking if an aluminum boat dealer has a warranty on their welds, that's a pretty sure sign to stay away or look elsewhere

Buying "small" and moving up works for some, not for others and most decisions are based on current economic situations, not what you may earn in the future (smart BTW).

Afraid I won't be able to access the areas down South that I want to fish with a fiberglass hull.

Where exactly are you thinking about fishing that you think aluminum will allow you to access instead of glass?

This thread reads like you had your mind made up, which is cool, but pervious owners of the boat you're looking at have provided some food for thought on why an xpress might not be the best option for what you're looking for.

i can tell you our 21 foot sea hunt will follow my 16 foot g3 anywhere. glass boats aren't as fragile as people think.

Now that the Excel has been out for a little longer... how is it compared to Xpress?

I'm not defending xpress, but I've been keeping any eye on the market for about two years now, and every big aluminum maker has some of these stories out there. It's the nature of welding aluminum and the internet, people are much more likely to write about a bad experience than a good one. With the sheer number of xpress boats in south LA alone it would be talked about a lot more if it was a pattern and only xpress's problem.

as I said earlier, you can get a custom, better built boat for cheaper. xpress and xcel are the two builders with weld problems and shitty customer service.
