I was successful this year for an Elk tag, first one in about 4 years.

Nice. I drew with one point in a limited entry area. I’ve deer and elk hunted the area previously, so looking forward to using that intel again.

I want to try for Wyoming next. Drew elk/deer combo Montana this year and found a nice piece of private land surrounded by public. Looking forward to it as a first elk trip.

You need to be building points in Wyoming. They do have a small amount of tags set aside for random, but for the most part, it’ll take five points to draw Wyoming elk.

If you have the money to burn, the random special odds for a general W tag this year was ~25%. Thats darn good odds for a random draw, but cost somewhere around $2,000 I believe.
Otherwise, start building them points and chasing the never ending point creep like Wby recommended.

I’ve been in my elk area twice before. One deer tag and one elk tag two years ago. I think I burned 14 points the last time. Since I had fairly recent intel, I put in for the special draw. They had two random tags available and 33 applicants. I never thought I’d go with the special draw, but it was worth it to me this time.
