The first thing I did with the ol'lady last week was give her the basic rules, and if the gun had a safety, how to operate it.

This is scary stuff.
I have seen double and triple shots on ranges before that scare the hell out of me with new shooters. Just let them get a few rounds down range while being about to handle the firearm single shot style.
