I’m a new AR owner, budget models. Shot federal brass first few hundred rounds.

See some great offers right now for Wolf and TulAmmo steel case @ $.20/rd shipped. Any suggestions on which is better? Stick w/brass? Deals available on Wolf brass and federal bulk ~$.28/rd.

I’ve been and will continue to be diligent about cleaning. Any advice is appreciated.

The Tul wouldn’t feed in my Ruger AR556. I bought a few hundred rounds because it was cheap and ended up giving it away to a friend. It wouldn’t shoot in his gun either. It has a coating on it and it gets sticky when the gun gets warm. My gun shoots brass ammo with no issue.

Pretty much the consensus I’ve found.

Don’t like the sound of this. Sticky seems much worse than just “dirty” ammo.

Thanks for the info, guys

Sounds like a rust inhibitor they put on it at the factory to increase shelf life and prevent rust. Like Cosmoline.

Personally, I don't shoot import steel cased and don't recommend it. I feel like every time I have been shooting with someone who brings cheap steel cased they always have a frustrating day and/or ultimately have a failure they cannot clear. However, that is just anecdotal evidence just like any other personal account of performance. Here is a link to a more scientific study on the issue of imported steel cased ammo from Lucky Gunner: LINK

Personally, I've shot the shite outa it, with NO problem.

All mine are Colt 1/7 Chrome-lined Bore & chamber.

Blasting ammo; not saying I'd use it for bug out ammo.

M855/M856/Mk262 for that; an' if M855A1 was readily available...

If you have to choose between those two I'd vote Wolf. It won't have as thick of a lacquer coating on the cases so you have less of a chance of one getting stuck in the chamber.

In that Lucky Gunner test that Prop linked, a Bushmaster AR ran 10,000 rounds of Federal 5.56 brass with 0 malfunctions and could still hold about a 3 MOA group. AS for steel ammo, the steel cases themselves, the coating on the cases, the lower pressure powder charge, and the bi-metal jacket on the bullet wears out a gun much faster. They concluded that for the price of brass ammo, with that high of a round count you could just buy a new barrel.

I prefer to stick with brass ammo but I also handload so my cost per round is much lower. It's ultimately your call and I imagine you will never shoot enough rounds of steel ammo to need to replace the barrel. Most people don't.

Shot brass only for a while then had too many folks tell me their steel wolf ammo was fine. So i switched. Have maybe 100 rounds of brass for if I take gun hunting or protection. Have 1000’s of steel. No issues. Especially if you are going to shoot a lot. No experience with tul

I don't like steel ammo, but if you plan on shooting a ton on a budget, it's not terrible. Go with wolf and be OCD about cleaning.

Laquer coating gumming up your chamber is a myth.

I love the steel ammo because its cheap. If it doesnt run in your gun, dont shoot it.

That luckygunner article is a whole lot of good information.

I shoot more Tulammo than anything at the range. Clean the gun after a range trip, never a hiccup. I'm talking .45 in an M&P .45, not an AR or anything like that.
