I think I'll put the brakes on fixing him. You guys know of any good gun dog clubs in NELA?

Hundreds of woodcock on our place. We also have a fair amount of quail. Is training the same for both birds?

No, but I will come up and bring my dogs and show you the best way to do so during hunting season.

Really bird dogs are 80% instinct, wild birds teach them the rest and a shock collar keeps them honest...

Quail you say, those are few are far between in these days. Treat them well. Farm land or something else?

Door is always open I enjoy working with dogs more than the kill itself. About 800 acres of 3 year old CRP surrounded by hay pasture. There were two covey of quail in my yard yesterday morning love to see that. Keeping the predators away is a pain though.

No shite. I wouldn't advertise that to people who know where you live.

ETA: And my GSP is a bitch. She will point the shite out of some quail. Very energetic dogs. Hope you are an active person or have kids who will run some of the energy out of him every day.

But seriously, frick that. I don't see how someone can sell you a dog and tell you you can't breed it (to another dog).

Well for starters read the contract before signing it. Secondly, if you want to be able to breed then by from joe blow down the road not a reputable breeder. Forgive them for trying to keep their bloodline and the GSP in general from being run down to shite. Like the rottweiler, lab, doberman and golden retriever to just name a few. I never understand the hate for breeders who have standards. Its a contract plain and simple, if you don't want it go somewhere else where your dog isn't guaranteed against some medical problems and what not....
Or you can spend the money and by a "show quality" dog or one that the breeder is ok with breeding....

Quail are like the shrimp of the sea, everything wants to eat them.

How old is the dog? I can tell you a shock collar will be in your future regardless of how you feel about them at the current time. 6-8 months is about the time frame. I highly recommend the Dogtra with the beeper combo...

A contract is a contract.

GSP's are already bred to shite. Bunch of special needs children.

Most are weirdos. You have to admit that.

He turned 1 June 9th I'm already looking into a shock collar the kennel that started training him used shock collars. We have used them on our rabbit dogs so I am not against them.

It doesn't take much and once they learn that you can reach out and touch them they have a lot more respect for your commands. I like to say a collar keeps a dog honest...

Are you talking about me or the OP? I thought I could run that beautiful dog into the ground. Let him chase birds in pecan groves for hours. But yes, in the end he was more than I could handle. He was a dick.

You are waaaay ahead of the game just because of this. Get that dog around wild birds. My "training" consists of me following mine around a thicket during woodcock season.
